D2 steel is a steel that is vacuum heat treated i.e raised to a high temp and rapidly cooled by a vacuum process it is an ideal steel to use for punch and dies or injection mould tools. It is a difficult material to machine and requires a special wheel for surface grinding after heat treatment. It also hardly moves during the treatment process so you can manufacture parts as thin as 2mm and leave only 0.004 for finish grinding.
D-2 is a high-carbon high-chromium tool steel manufactured for high abrasive wear applications. D-2 can be heat treated to RC 64. This grade as a low tempering temperature. Many of the common coatings can not be applied because the process temperature used to apply the coating is higher than the tempering temperature of the D-2 tool steel.
For this material, D2 tool steel, you can find detailed data check list at www dot astmsteel dot com/product/d2-tool-steel-1-2379-x153crmo12-skd11/.
The high chromium content gives this grade some stainless properties, although, it is not classified as a stainless steel.
D-2 is used for barrel liners in the plastic molding industry, die components in the metal stamping industry, and many other applications requiring high wear resistance in many other industries.

Why is it important to use a fixed common reference point for dimensioning of drawings and sketches?
It is important to use a fixed common reference point on your work peace or drawing to avoid cumulative error, i.e. if a hole is drilled using an incorrect measurement initially, then continuation to measure from the error instead of using a common reference point could result in a whole piece of work being scrapped. Also if somebody has to take over the work, they would need to understand were the dimensions were taken from to enable them to carry on with the work.
The ability of the metal to resist corrosion in atmosphere with moist.corrosion ocuurs in ferrous materials in which ferrous chemically react with oxygen forming rust or corrosion.
Corrosion can be avoided by Heat treatment and surface coating .
Thermosetting plastics (thermosets) are polymer materials that irreversibly cure, to a stronger form. The cure may be done through heat (generally above 200 degrees Celsius), through a chemical reaction (two-part epoxy, for example), or irradiation such as electron beam processing.
Thermoset materials are usually liquid or malleable prior to curing and designed to be molded into their final form, or used as adhesives.
The curing process transforms the resin into a plastic or rubber by a cross-linking process. Energy and/or catalysts are added that cause the molecular chains to react at chemically active sites (unsaturated or epoxy sites, for example), linking into a rigid, 3-D structure. The cross-linkingprocess forms a molecule with a larger molecular weight, resulting in a material with a highermelting point. During the reaction, when the molecular weight has increased to a point so that the melting point is higher than the surrounding ambient temperature, the material forms into a solid material.
Uncontrolled reheating of the material results in reaching the decomposition temperature before the melting point is obtained. Therefore, a thermoset material cannot be melted and re-shaped after it is cured. This implies that thermosets cannot be recycled, except as filler material.[1]
Thermoset materials are generally stronger than thermoplastic materials due to this 3-D network of bonds, and are also better suited to high-temperature applications up to the decomposition temperature of the material.
How much pressure in a 100 mm diameter vertical pipe with 40 meters height?
It depends on whether the pipe is open or closed and what it contains. If the pipe is full of water to a height of 40 m and open at the top, the pressure at the bottom is about 57 psig. The diameter doesn't matter.

How does nitrogen help the plant?
Nitrogen is one of the most important elements in organic compounds along with Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. Soil in most areas are rich in Oxygen, Carbon, and Hydrogen, but the Nitrogen composition is usually close to the bare minimum for a plant's existence. In order for a plant to truly thrive, Nitrogen enriched fertilizers are necessary.
Did spiegel inc sell cast iron stoves or heaters?
I have a cast iron stove that has a plate on the back that says Spiegel, Inc. Chicago, Ill. on it. I don't know if it is the same or not.
Case hardening or surface hardening is the process of hardening the surface of a metal, often a low carbon steel, by infusing elements into the material's surface, forming a thin layer of a harder alloy.
How does vapor absorption chiller work?
A chemical heat pump is based on the principles that water molecules bind more efficiently to certain hygroscopic salts or Silica Gel than to other water molecules. As a consequence, when using two separate bowls - one containing water (evaporator), and the other containing hygroscopic salt (reactor) - in a confined space, water will evaporate to the salt that absorbs the water. When the confined space is in a state of vacuum the water transport will be so high that the water will start boiling in order to produce vapour at the same speed as it is absorbed by the salt. Such evaporation requires energy. If the energy is not supplied from outside the system it will be taken from the water itself, which as a consequence gets colder. In essence the evaporation process transports thermal energy (heat) from the water to the salt. The temperature difference increases until a maximum difference (ΔT), at which the salt is no longer able to absorb more water. If the cold evaporator is connected to the indoor heat exchange system we will get air conditioning (refrigeration). Chemical Heat Pumps have historically either been based on a solid or a fluid reactor substance, where only absorption machines based on fluid reactor principles have made any commercial success. The fluid salt solution reactor is efficient in its ability to absorb energy. It has a high charge and discharge power. However, since the fluid solution is efficient in absorbing heat the reactor temperature continuously increases. As a consequence the loading capacity of the system decreases to the point where the ΔT no longer is sufficient to run the process at all. Moreover, the good heat absorption characteristics of the fluid also mean it will not store energy efficiently. As a consequence, fluid reactors are designed for converting thermal energy to cooling in a continuous process, and cannot for practical purposes be powered by a source of energy that fluctuates over time, such as solar energy. The positive aspects of using a solid reactor substance are that it enables a constant loading ΔT between the evaporator and the reactor. In other words, the solid reactor substance does not increase much in temperature as it is charged. Energy is efficiently stored, (in terms of energy per volume unit) in the solid salt but has a very poor charge and discharge power. Because of its poor heat conductivity characteristics there are very few practical applications for absorption machines based of a solid substance. The implications of the 3-phase system are that a constant temperature difference between evaporator and reactor is achieved at that same time as excellent storage capabilities and high charge and discharge power are maintained. All the positive aspects of the solid substance and the liquid substance converge into one technology. In essence the initially fluid salt solution reactor substance is crystallized into a solid state as thermal energy is added to the reactor. Energy is stored efficiently and with practically no losses in the dried salt. The practical implications of this energy storage solution are that a fluctuating source of energy for the first time can be used efficiently to deliver cooling and heating 24/7.
What is the difference between HVAC precision air conditioning and computer room air conditioner?
Precision A/C systems are primarily designed for cooling electronic equipment, rather than people. These pre-packaged systems offer excellent reliability and typically have a high ratio of sensible-to-total cooling capacity and a high CFM/ton ratio.
Subjects needed for mechanical engineering?
I think Physics , Chemistery , Mathematics , Bio-logy are the subjects needed.
Another Perspective:That depends on the institution. Some of the local community colleges or technical schools will just focus on the math and physics. A University will have standards which represent a minimum level of education required for graduation. For example:
you can learn how to calculate loads for a specific span using different materials by simply attending a physics class and having the basic math skills necessary for that class.
But if you are attending a University and plan to graduate with your degree, you'll also need to know how to communicate with others, so they will require English writing skills.
You may be required to understand some of the computer programs available to assist with design AND document writing.
They will want you to know a little about people, so they may have requirements about psychology, biology, organic chemistry and other subjects.
They may want their graduates to be able to converse with other educated people, so they may require literature and art.
They may want you to be able to take care of yourself, so they may require health classes and physical eduction.
It is a little difficult to find a simple example of fatigue. For most common items, there is no investigation into the cause of failure so we don't know what caused it. We simple through the part away and get another one. If the pedal on our bicycle breaks, we just throw it away and get a new one; no questions asked. The earliest example of fatigue failure is the failure of an axle. There are some much early examples but even going back to the beginning of the 20th Century, there were some train crashes that was due to failure of the axle or the axle-to-wheel joint. This is a common example because an axle is a long rod that is bent. So as the train rolls, the axle is bent one direction and then the opposite as it revolves. A train can travel for hundreds of miles and thousands upon thousands of revolutions. Also, the early axle/wheel designs had sharp corners that also contributed to fatigue failure as it raises the stress at the joint. I find another example of fatigue laying on the street. If you look around you will find lug nuts from a car's wheel. It will have the lug nut and the stud that it was threaded on both together. The stud will be broken and inside the nut. The fracture surface of the stud or lug will have features that signify a fatigue failure. You may have to inspect it under a 10X magnifying glass to see this (or ask an engineer to show you). This failure of the lug nut experience a fatigue failure either because of repeated torquing of the nut when installing the wheel OR by the same factors as described about the train axle/wheel failures. Maybe the wheel is warped and it is applying high repeated loads to the lug nut. This is a practical example but may require someone who can identify it as a fatigure failure. Some websites will give as a simple example of fatigue failure is the bending of a paper clip or a wire coat hanger. This is NOT FATIGUE. When you bend a paper clip or coat hanger back and forth you are Yielding the part or deforming it permanently. Loads that produce fatigue failure do not bend the part; the load just applies stress and then relieves the stress. When you bend a coat hangar back and forth you may feel heat at the bend---that indicates the properties of the metal is being affected by other means. This is not Fatigue.

What is equilibrium interatomic distance?
As N isolated atoms are brought together -- up to the dimension of the lattice constant -- each atom's outer energy level (n=1,2,3,..) and associated angular momentum quantum states (l=0,1,2,3,...,n-1) cannot be degenerate (Pauli's exclusion principle). The energy levels from all N atoms overlap and form quasi-continuous energy bands which eventually merge as interatomic distance decreases. At the the *equilibrium interatomic distance* however this band will split again to form two discrete bands -- the valence and conduction band -- with quantum states in both. At ground state (no carrier excitation) all electrons will occupy the valence band states with all conduction band states empty. Given sufficient energy to surmount the forbidden energy gap (Eg=Ec-Ev) an electron can enter the conduction band (generation).

What is the difference between the modulus of rigidity and modulus of elasticity?
We knew from Hook's law- "stress is proportional to strain."
So, stress = k * strain [here, k is a constant]
or, stress/strain= k
Now,
if the stress and strain occurs due to axial force
then k is known as modulus of elasticity and it is denoted by E.
if the stress and strain occurs due to shear force
then k is known as modulus of rigidity and it is denoted by G.
