How many threads should a bolt engage?

As a general rule, a bolt should engage a distancegreater than or equal to its outer diameter. The number of threads engaged can then be calculated from the number of threads per inch on the bolt. So if you are using a 1/4-20 bolt, meaning it has 1/4" diameter and 20 threads per inch, you should engage the bolt 1/4" into the hole, or 5 threads. (20 threads/inch x 1/4 inches)

Why: The shear stress on the threads will be equal to the tensile stress in the shank of the bolt. This means that once you thread the bolt in a distance greater than its diameter, the shank itself will fail before the threads shear off the bolt under tensile load.

How does a cnc milling machine work?

A CNC laser machine utilizes a Computer to Numerically Control it. Common CNC language is called G-code (though roughly standardized, there are many forms). The CNC laser machine is different from the Windows driver or plotter style CNC machine that can laser engrave or laser cut directly from a third party design package like Corel Draw, AutoCAD, or Adobe Illustrator.

The G code of the CNC provides advanced control and more capability, and with this capability comes increased complexity and the need for more training. But the trade-off is worthwhile in a production environment where accuracy, quality and efficiency are paramount.

First, a drawing is made in a third party package such as AutoCAD or Solidworks, and exported in 2D format (dwg, dxf). A CAM packaged (Computer Aided Manufacturing) is utilized to enable the user to perform several functions that improve the accuracy, efficiency and quality of the laser cutting. For example, the user can decide to add a lead-in and tail-out for circle cutting or hole cutting. The laser pierces a hole in metal and the pierce creates a larger diameter hole that the cut line. So, rather than having circles with a notch where the laser pierced, the user pierces inside the hole (where the scrap is) and then cuts a lead in line to the circle then after finishing the circle cut leads out into the scrap area again. Other functions include setting the tool width and then compensating for the width of the laser cut line. This makes for higher accuracy in cut parts. Additional functions include setting cut order to minimize head up moves. In some cases, the user can specify gas or air assist pressures in the laser setup section at the top of the g-code.

Use a welding helmet or face shield when the arc is in process to protect your face from UV burns and your eyes from "arc eye". Wear safety glasses at all times to ensure that your eyes are protected from any particles or debris that my fly into your eyes.
