The metric system is generally considered superior to the imperial system due to its easy of conversion between units.

For example:

10 millimeters = 1 centimeter

100 centimeters = 1 meter

1000 meters = 1 kilometer

1000 milliliters = 1 liter

1000 grams = 1 kilogram

The smallest commonly used units in the metric system are alot smaller than those of the imperial system and can therefore make more accurate measurements with out needing to use fractions.

Please note that there are a few exceptions. The United States, mainly, does not - in practice, at least, they continue using the "imperial system", even though the metric system is "official" for quite a while now. Also, in many countries they continue mixing metric units with non-metric units. And for some specific units, non-metric units are still very common, for example the degree Centigrade instead of the Kelvin, and units other than the second for time.

Anyway, the reason for the popularity of the metric system is that it turned out to be very convenient to have shared units of measure. For example, before the metric system, people used pounds for both weight and mass. People tended to confuse the two concepts - some still do; but the real problem was that different countries, or regions, used different definitions of the pound. A pound in one country might weight more than a pound somewhere else.

All masses are measured in kilograms. For historical reasons the normal prefixes are applied to the gram, rather than the kilogram, but the base unit is the kilogram.
