Why do Mormons have to travel on overseas missions?
They don't. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are encouraged to go on missions, but a mission is not required. Most Mormon missionaries are single young adults between 19 and 27 years old or retired adults. Missionaries are not required to go overseas, in fact, they usually serve in their home countries.
When a Mormon decides to serve a mission, they submit an application to Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. Several weeks later, they will receive a letter informing them when and where they will serve. Most of the time, missionaries will be called to another area of their home country or to a neighboring country. This is usually most effective, because they will have the language and culture in common with those they are teaching. However, missionaries are called wherever there is need, and often there is need for missionaries in a country that simply can't supply enough missionaries. This is especially common for missionaries from the United States. Over half of Mormon missionaries are from the United States, but most Mormon missionaries serve outside of the United States. Serving in another country enables young people to develop and appreciation for other cultures as well as recognize the condition of those who are less fortunate than themselves.
As for why Mormons serve missions, the first reason is that Jesus commands "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15) Mormons desire to follow the commandments of Jesus Christ, and travelling the world to preach the gospel is one of these commandments. In addition, by teaching and assisting others and giving years of selfless service, missionaries strengthen their own faith and form a unique relationship with God. Spending years away from the trends and popular things of the 'world' allows missionaries to come home with a better perspective of what is important in life. Young adult missionaries also often come home much better prepared for family and career than their peers since they develop service, discipline, responsibility, leadership, and goal-setting habits.

What do you get a lds missionary for Christmas?
Well, I'm sure they would like advice. You might just want to send them something they really want or need with a heart-felt card and good advice. They would love to know that they're appreciated and loved and that they are in your prayers. Often times it is very hard for them to find someone who is willing to listen or find someone who might have a change of heart because of his/her troubles. So you might want to quote or say some thing like "200 lds missionaries every day find someone who needs their help after months of searching" or "50 missionaries come home every 8 months discouraged when if they stayed for only 3 more days they would have found a possible lds" or give them lots more encouragement.
I am quite sure this will help.
Thanks,
M_tiger.
Find something they don't have where he is. I'm sure he's written home lamenting his lack of peanut butter, deodorant, or root beer, so ask his mother what he's written about. Those listed before are standards. My parents sent me an 18" synthetic Christmas tree--something I could use and still leave in the closet for future missionaries. Also, newspapers from home. (I would always get big care packages, and go straight for the crumpled up newspapers used as packaging fodder.) Just remember to keep your gifts within his rules--he may not be allowed to use a video camera, for example. Feel free to call his Mission President with specific questions. Oh, and if you're referring to Senior Missionaries, they don't have rules really. My parents always asked for, and got, seasons of West Wing and other shows. --User:Mrcolj14:27, 2 Sep 2009 (UTC)
Who was the first missionary to Wisconsin?
There were Society of Jesus missionaries in French Quebec between 1625 and 1665, during the time (1634) that Jean Nicollet came in contact with the native tribes of Wisconsin. Some missions may have preceded those of Father Jacques Marquette in 1668, who established a mission near present-day Ashland.
Did missionaries live in circh?
Yes, missionaries often lived in churches or nearby facilities as part of their work in spreading their faith and providing services to communities. These living arrangements allowed them to be close to their congregation and engage in daily activities such as worship, education, and community support. Additionally, many churches have served as centers for missionary activities, providing resources and a base for outreach efforts.
She was a missionary to Assiout, Egypt and she opened one of the largest orphanages in the world today. By her death she had around 10,000 widows and orphans put together!

Was Gladys Aylward a missionary?
Yes, she was. She wanted to become a missionary and went to a school to become one and was told she wasn't qualified. She told herself no one can tell her if she were qualified or not. She wanted to go to China and heard of a 73-yr. old missionary woman who needed help. She went to be her helper and soon became a blessing to China.

How do you tell a Mormon Missionary that you like him?
The same way you would know if any other girl likes you. She would probably flirt with you, pay more attention to how she looks and acts around you, go out of her way to spend time with you or see you, etc. It wouldn't hurt to ask her on a date, but be aware that if she's under 16 she probably doesn't date, and she might feel more comfortable on a group date. LDS people have high moral standards and generally do not pair off until closer to marriage age. LDS teen dating standards can be found at the link provided.
What place needs a missionary?
Haiti, Darfur, Afganastan...
Answer:
Abraham Maslow set up a hierarchic theory of needs. This was a hierarchy of five levels of basic needs which are summarized as:
Beyond these needs, higher levels of needs exist. These (in no order) include:
Maslow states that a person does not feel the lack of any subsequent need until the underlying need is met. Based on this a person does not need "Missionaries" to satisfy or address spiritual needs until all the 5 basic needs are met.
Most of the worlds third world societies and war zones lack at least one and perhaps all of the five basic needs. They do not need, or even know that they need, spiritual concerns addressed until they can reach first world conditions. Therefore the places that might need missionaries would be wealthy first world areas.
How do you tell a Mormon missionary that you are in love with him before he leaves?
Take it from a guy who knows and was on a mission once. He doesn't want to know what girls like him right before he goes home. And missionaries ARE different than other regular people. Missionaries are suppose to stay focused on work for their church right to the last minute, not thinking about a girl. Wait until he is home or you may get a cold response (the standard missionary response). If you write, call each other and end up liking each other, long distance relationships do work out - take it from someone who also knows.
AnswerI still say tell him. There is no reason he may not welcome this information from you and I can't see where it would cause him any problems with his work abilities. Many missionaries are married and work as a couple. And I've never seen one stray from what they believe in; they go the distance without missing a beat.God gave us love and to put a muzzle on telling someone you love them is simply not right. Sometimes when things get tough for us it's wonderful to know love can keep a person going. During all wars, many of the men (and sometimes women) kept going when they felt so low because they wanted to fight and survive for the one they loved. Missionary work is about love and by not telling this young man how you feel then it doesn't make any sense at all.
Mormons are no different than anyone else. Because of your religious beliefs it's all the more reason you are honest and speak from the heart to this person. NEVER live with "what ifs". Even if this person doesn't feel the same about you NEVER fear rejection, but be proud of yourself for being honest and giving it a chance. Too often us humans suppress our feelings and regret never telling someone we care about how we feel.
AnswerActually, I think both respondents are correct. You shouldn't tell him right away, but you should tell him. As a Mormon who served a mission, I can tell you how hard you have to concentrate and the rules you have to follow while on your mission... *including* no fraternizing with members of the opposite sex. Get his address and ask if you can write to him. Then, when he gets transferred, you can write and tell him how you feel.Of course it is important to express our feelings, and to offer love to others. Just, because of the rules of the mission, you don't want the guy to get in trouble either. ... so, wait, and then tell him after he moves to another area. If he likes you, he will write to you, and there are a lot of missionaries who eventually do marry people they met during their missions. Just remember... one kiss and he could get kicked off the mission. That is why it is much, much nicer to the missionary to tell him after he leaves the area.
To faithfully live as a follower of Jesus and make disciples as Jesus commanded his disciples to do before he ascended into heaven.
Spreading the gospel of Jesus to everyone with a thankful heart.
The question is how to define "missionary." The examples above clearly take the most literal definition, that of one who visits a foreign place and spends all his or her time proactively and transitively coaxing people into being baptized. But there are so many other types of missionaries, so I find it best to see the phrase "missionary" as "consecrated volunteer clergy." Was Mother Theresa a missionary? Of course, but she was not the evangelical type rather she was, but she just thought taking care of people physically was a precursor to discussing abstract concepts with them on any profound level. Did the Hawaiian or African missionaries spend all their time preaching, or were they successful precisely because their model involved living among the people for decades, building groundwork as they raised money to build their churches?
In other words, it varies extremely. In Texas, I spent a good portion of each day visiting members, building rapport with them so they would feel comfortable referring their friends who were having problems to me. We spent some of most days knocking on doors; and some of each day visiting inactive members of the church. One afternoon a week generally we'd spend volunteering at a hospital or reading books to kids at the library.
My parents, on the other hand, went to Albania. There my father was assigned to church leadership roles in developing congregations while my mother orchestrated the building of orphanages, developed a national tooth care training program for kids, and planned neonatal resuscitation training for the med schools. They are very blue collar printers and have no background in any of the above!
So a missionary is anyone who is actively building the kingdom of God, especially those who, on a regular and scheduled basis work to that end, being notably or visibly set apart from the population and therefore holding themselves forth by that population as such. I
Answer2: Jesus was the greatest teacher and missionary. Ones who follow in his footsteps publicly speaks and publishes the word of God.
