How do you tell a Mormon Missionary that you like him?

The same way you would know if any other girl likes you. She would probably flirt with you, pay more attention to how she looks and acts around you, go out of her way to spend time with you or see you, etc. It wouldn't hurt to ask her on a date, but be aware that if she's under 16 she probably doesn't date, and she might feel more comfortable on a group date. LDS people have high moral standards and generally do not pair off until closer to marriage age. LDS teen dating standards can be found at the link provided.

What place needs a missionary?

Haiti, Darfur, Afganastan...

Answer:

Abraham Maslow set up a hierarchic theory of needs. This was a hierarchy of five levels of basic needs which are summarized as:

  1. Survival Needs: Food, shelter, warmth, medical care
  2. Safety Needs: The need for security
  3. Social Need: A need for love, belonging and human relationships
  4. Esteem: A need to have self esteem and a positive image of self
  5. Self Actualization: A need to do what a person feels they should do to satisfy their own needs of contributing to the world.

Beyond these needs, higher levels of needs exist. These (in no order) include:

  • needs for understanding,
  • aesthetic appreciation and
  • purely spiritual needs.

Maslow states that a person does not feel the lack of any subsequent need until the underlying need is met. Based on this a person does not need "Missionaries" to satisfy or address spiritual needs until all the 5 basic needs are met.

Most of the worlds third world societies and war zones lack at least one and perhaps all of the five basic needs. They do not need, or even know that they need, spiritual concerns addressed until they can reach first world conditions. Therefore the places that might need missionaries would be wealthy first world areas.

How do you tell a Mormon missionary that you are in love with him before he leaves?

AnswerDon't tell him before he leaves. The problem with LDS missionaries is that they are working for their church and not suppose to think about women. Telling him might keep him from focusing on the last part of his mission which would be unfair to him, your church, and the people he might be teaching. What you should do is ask if you could write him when he goes home, then get his home address. When he has left for home, write him that letter and confess your feelings. He can actually respond like a man (rather than a missionary) once he is officially off his mission.

Take it from a guy who knows and was on a mission once. He doesn't want to know what girls like him right before he goes home. And missionaries ARE different than other regular people. Missionaries are suppose to stay focused on work for their church right to the last minute, not thinking about a girl. Wait until he is home or you may get a cold response (the standard missionary response). If you write, call each other and end up liking each other, long distance relationships do work out - take it from someone who also knows.

AnswerI still say tell him. There is no reason he may not welcome this information from you and I can't see where it would cause him any problems with his work abilities. Many missionaries are married and work as a couple. And I've never seen one stray from what they believe in; they go the distance without missing a beat.

God gave us love and to put a muzzle on telling someone you love them is simply not right. Sometimes when things get tough for us it's wonderful to know love can keep a person going. During all wars, many of the men (and sometimes women) kept going when they felt so low because they wanted to fight and survive for the one they loved. Missionary work is about love and by not telling this young man how you feel then it doesn't make any sense at all.

Mormons are no different than anyone else. Because of your religious beliefs it's all the more reason you are honest and speak from the heart to this person. NEVER live with "what ifs". Even if this person doesn't feel the same about you NEVER fear rejection, but be proud of yourself for being honest and giving it a chance. Too often us humans suppress our feelings and regret never telling someone we care about how we feel.

AnswerActually, I think both respondents are correct. You shouldn't tell him right away, but you should tell him. As a Mormon who served a mission, I can tell you how hard you have to concentrate and the rules you have to follow while on your mission... *including* no fraternizing with members of the opposite sex. Get his address and ask if you can write to him. Then, when he gets transferred, you can write and tell him how you feel.

Of course it is important to express our feelings, and to offer love to others. Just, because of the rules of the mission, you don't want the guy to get in trouble either. ... so, wait, and then tell him after he moves to another area. If he likes you, he will write to you, and there are a lot of missionaries who eventually do marry people they met during their missions. Just remember... one kiss and he could get kicked off the mission. That is why it is much, much nicer to the missionary to tell him after he leaves the area.

What does a missionary do?

To faithfully live as a follower of Jesus and make disciples as Jesus commanded his disciples to do before he ascended into heaven.

Spreading the gospel of Jesus to everyone with a thankful heart.

The question is how to define "missionary." The examples above clearly take the most literal definition, that of one who visits a foreign place and spends all his or her time proactively and transitively coaxing people into being baptized. But there are so many other types of missionaries, so I find it best to see the phrase "missionary" as "consecrated volunteer clergy." Was Mother Theresa a missionary? Of course, but she was not the evangelical type rather she was, but she just thought taking care of people physically was a precursor to discussing abstract concepts with them on any profound level. Did the Hawaiian or African missionaries spend all their time preaching, or were they successful precisely because their model involved living among the people for decades, building groundwork as they raised money to build their churches?

In other words, it varies extremely. In Texas, I spent a good portion of each day visiting members, building rapport with them so they would feel comfortable referring their friends who were having problems to me. We spent some of most days knocking on doors; and some of each day visiting inactive members of the church. One afternoon a week generally we'd spend volunteering at a hospital or reading books to kids at the library.

My parents, on the other hand, went to Albania. There my father was assigned to church leadership roles in developing congregations while my mother orchestrated the building of orphanages, developed a national tooth care training program for kids, and planned neonatal resuscitation training for the med schools. They are very blue collar printers and have no background in any of the above!

So a missionary is anyone who is actively building the kingdom of God, especially those who, on a regular and scheduled basis work to that end, being notably or visibly set apart from the population and therefore holding themselves forth by that population as such. I

When did Paul decide to travel as a missionary?

AnswerIn his Epistle to the Galatians, Paul seems quite clear about his main travels for his first twenty years as a missionary. He said that after his conversion, he travelled first to Arabia, then Damascus (bypassing Jerusalem), Jerusalem, then Syria and Cilicia, and back to Jerusalem. Paul spent 3 years in Damascus, but escaped the city when the governor under Aretas, king of the Nabateans from 9 BCE to 40 CE, had a garrison deployed to arrest him because of his Christian activities. This information gives us a first-cut estimate for the start of Paul's missionary work There is no reason at this stage to assume that the escape should have occurred near the end of the king's reign, a somewhat improbable coincidence, but if it did then Paul's conversion was around the year 36.

On the other hand, Acts of the Apostles says that Paul went first to Damascus and Jerusalem. After some short trips in Palestine, he began his "first missionary journey" to Antioch, Seleucia, Cyprus, South Galatia and back to Antioch and Jerusalem. After a series of three long missionary journeys, Acts has Paul charged and brought before Herod Agrippa, who died in 44 CE. If this is correct and if Paul had already been an apostle for over twenty years, then his conversion and decision to become a missionary would have needed to occur sometime in the early 20s of the first century, too early for the traditional history of Christianity.

How was nepotism ended by the early church?

The word nepotism is from the Latin word nepos, meaning "nephew" or "grandchild" and is used to mean the granting of favours or privileges to relatives or friends, regardless of merit. During the Middle Ages, popes used to provide for their illegitimate children by describing them as "nephews" and ensuring that they were given key positions within the church.

The practice ended in 1692, when Pope Innocent XII issued the bull Romanum decet Pontificem, prohibiting popes from bestowing estates, offices, or revenues on any relative, with the exception that one qualified relative (at most) could be made a Cardinal.

Why were the Boxers opposed to missionaries?

The Boxers were concerned about foreign influences and the introduction of opium by European traders. Adrian Hastings (A World History of Christianity) says the missionaries were haunted by the fear that pride would drive the Chinese to revolt, and so thought it important to keep them in a state of humility. Missionaries, Protestant as well as Catholic, had depended on the opium connection, with many travelling to China in ships carrying opium, their funds remitted via opium traders and their charitable or educational work relying on donations from resident Western firms connected with the opium trade.

How long did Paul stay in Samothrace during his second missionary journey?

The scripture doesn't make clear whether Paul actually went ashore on the island of Samothrace, but the ship was apparently only in the area one day before heading to Neapolis.(Acts 16:11). It is said that, even today, the present-day island of Samothraki offers places to safely anchor a large ship, while not having a particularly good harbor for disembarking.

What is your experience with the LDS missionaries and being a convert?

This is my experience with the LDS church and the missionaries:

I was a single mom with children....the two missionaries came into my life and made me very happy only to end up with heartbreak when they were done with their mission and left you. At first you think they are very educated and really love their work on a mission, but this isn't always true. Many of them feel pressured to go on a mission. They are not the psychiatrists or the conduits you think they are for the church. I believe they do love the church but not always as much as you think. After they are done with their mission they do not like talking about the gospel as much as you thought they would. I tried e-mailing or writing them after, and they aren't as focused on the gospel or as interested in talking about it as they were while they were on their missions.

I wanted to continue talking about the scriptures with them after their mission was done as a friend but was disappointed in not feeling like they wanted to. They are young they are and they are human... so don't judge a book by its cover... the smiles, the finely dressed look, and the impression that they are fully educated in the LDS gospel can be temporary. I cried my eyes out when my first missionaries that got us baptized moved on. I felt ignored.

I do believe in the church fully, but now I understand what was going on. I don't want anyone else blindsided by getting converted for the missionaries rather than for God. Just love the church and study the scriptures and do it for you and God only.
