I don't know the strength, though. I do know that when we applied a slurry of water and Borax to our front stoop (cement) to keep out ants, the mildew disappeared over the next couple of days. It has not returned, and it has been several months now. I live on the north side of the building, and my door is almost constantly in the shade. The mildew would have returned by now normally.

I don't think such a strong concentration of Borax is necessary, but I am going to make a pretty strong (but liquid) solution to treat the sidewalk now that my stoop has stayed white for so long.

I did a search and found this: 1/4 cup Borax in 2 cups water. Do a search with the words "borax" and "mildew" and you should come up with quite a bit of information.

I am allergic to Penicillin and certain types of mold spores. There is I am certain scientific processes that could narrow down which ones your are sensitive to. There are over 100,000 different mold species, so it would depend on which specific ones you come in contact with as to whether you would be allergic or not since not all forms of mold are used to create Penicillin.

The method you use to get rid of a mildew smell will depend on where the smell is coming from. In a room of your house you should make sure the room is well ventilated and fix any leaks which are allowing moisture to enter and remain in the room. For carpets, you can try having them professionally cleaned by a carpet cleaning company but if the mildew is really set in they may need to be replaced. Mop down walls and floors with a solution of bleach and water. Use 1/2 to 1 cup of liquid household bleach to a gallon (3.8 liters) of water. Rinse with clear water and wipe as dry as possible. For clothes or towels, remove mildew spots by brushing them off - make sure to do it outside to prevent releasing the mildew spores in the house and be sure to wear a face mask. Expose the fabrics to sun and air. Then wash with soap or detergent and water, rinse well and dry in the sun rather than a drier. Use lemon juice and salt or chlorine bleach to remove any remaining stains. This will also remove the mildew odor. Never use a chlorine bleach on silk, wool or Spandex fabrics and be sure or on colored fabrics. Always check labels on clothes for any cleaning warnings. Because the warmth and moisture levels accelerate it's growth speed and if the conditions were cold and dry, depending on the species of the mold it would still survive but it's growth speed would slow down or even stop.
