How fast can a bike be ridden?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

As fast as you cn pedal it. Olympic Cyclist and IRONMAN triathlon winner, John Howard set a 152.2 Miles per Hour speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah on July 20, 1985.
This is very much dependent on how fit you are, what surface you're cycling on and what your bicycle is like. On road, on a racing bike, with thin slick tyres, the answer would probably be around 20mph average speed on the flat. If you're fitter, it will be higher. On a mountain bike with fat treaded tyres, you'll be doing well if you get above 15-20mph. On hills everything slows down or speeds up, depending if it's up or down.
No way of telling. Plenty of riders can hit 50 km/h on the open road. Track bikes are even faster. Faired recumbents even more so. DH bikes on special courses can go well over 100 km/h. Then again, some people will struggle to reach 20 km/h unless there's a slope to help them.
John Howard set a bicycle speed record on July, 20 1985. This was accomplished while drafting behind a specially designed vehicle to decrease the aerodynamic drag against John almost to nothing. In doing so, Howard was able to accelerate to an incredible 152.2 mph. This feat is known as "Motor Pacing." The drafting speed has since been bested by a fellow from Europe at 167.

However the more recognized record is the one that is set by a bicyclist racing without the assist of anything to draft from and on flat ground. Canadian rider Sam Whittingham piloted a bicycle with an aerodynamic shell built around it to 81.5 mph on his own in the desert in Nevada, making that the Official bicycle speed record.
The fastest speed is 80 mph
Depends on how you categorise riding. There has been aerodynamic recumbent bikes on the flat roads that have clocked 82mph which is the current fastest top speed from last I checked (set in 2002)

Downhill on road bicycles has reached to a little bit above 65mph. downhill motorpacing I've seen exceed 100mpg

Then there has also been motor pacing techniques to test a cyclists speed which a pro can do that at around 100mph or so. however The fastest speed achieved on a bicycle was 204.73 kph (127.243 mph), by Jose Meiffret (France), July 16, 1962, on the German Autobahn from Freiburg, behind a car (see below Events).

Is it legal to ride a dirt bike in long island?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's kind of a grey area, I actually own a Electric Bike store on Long Island called Long Isalond Electric Bikes and I have yet to have a customer have legal trouble. There was a law developed in the 1980's making motorized bikes illegal, but that was before electrice bikes existed. The federal Law has since made a law declaring electric bikes with a top speed of 20 or under legal for use on public roads, but NY has not developed any new legislation.

Is it legal to ride dirt bikes in your neighborhood?

Not sure of the legality but have you considered the fact that it is a neighborhood and maybe the neighbors enjoy a peaceful neighborhood? Neighborhoods were not meant for dirt bike recreation. It is a place where people come to their homes after long days at work and school.

Is it legal for a 13-year-old to ride a dirt bike in Florida?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Only someone with detailed knowledge about the Florida laws can tell you the exact answer, but usually the law doesn't care as long as the engine is weak enough, there's a definition about an "assist" engine. But once you go past this power restriction your bike is seen as a scooter or a moped instead, and will then have to comply with all the laws relating to that. Which is yet one excellent reason why motorized bicycles aren't such a hot idea.

How to get a tattoo license in Tennessee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You are required to apprentice for 1 year under an artist that has been licensed for a minimum of 3 years in TN.

Go make some friends, see if you can't land an apprenticeship.

A one year apprenticeship does not equal a license, the artist must then vouch for you once it is complete.

You also have to take a class or two and then pass a few tests from the health department.

Are neon lights illegal in California?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you really want to get technical about it, ANY neon lights are illegal on motor vehicles because they are not DOT approved lighting systems. BLUE and RED lights are a particularly bad choice, because you could be arrested for trying to impersonate a police officer. You could probably get away with using them as long as the car is parked in a parking lot, or on private property, but don't forget to turn them off before cruising the streets, or you may be looking at a local jail from the wrong side of the bars.

Do you need a license for a 50CC motorbike in South Africa?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This applies to the roads named with N numbers, such as N1, N2, N3 etc.

If the national road is NOT a freeway, then you can ride on it with a cycle.

Where national roads pass through bigger cities they are upgraded to freeway status and cycling is forbidden. In such cases you must find an alternative route.

When should a young child wear a helmet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A young child should always wear a helmet when riding a bike or motorcycle. In most places, there are laws requiring anyone under a certain age (often 16 or 18) to wear a helmet.

Of particular note:

If the child is doing tricks on a bike, they definitely need a helmet.

If the child is unstable, they definitely need a helmet.

If the child is going at high speeds, they definitely need a helmet.

If the bike is in poor condition or has brakes that are difficult to use, they definitely need a helmet.

If the child is inexperienced with using the front brake, but does so anyway, they definitely need a helmet.

If the bike is too small and therefore too top heavy, the child definitely needs a helmet.

If the child has trouble following commands but still needs supervision, they definitely need a helmet.

In general, whenever there is a high risk of the child running their head into something at high speed, and/or with the force of their body behind it, they should wear a helmet.

Bikes move at high speeds. Even a child can reach speeds sufficient to cause severe injury or possibly even death on level ground, and anyone going down a hill can get sufficient momentum that even a helmet may not protect them from the worst of accidents. A 6% grade is steep enough that, given sufficient time, a biker will reach speeds in excess of 40 MPH, equivalent to the speed someone would be falling after they had fallen 60 feet. A head-on collision at this speed without a helmet would be like biking out of a 6th story window.

If you mean the bike on which they toured South America: Alberto Granado was the owner of the bike, a 500cc Norton according to Che's book "The Motorcycle Diaries" in which they call it "El Ponderoso II", "the powerful one". It was a single cylinder carbureted bike. The one in the movie was a stand-in and a overhead-valve model.
