Mount Everest

The name of the Sherpa was Tenzing Norgay. He helped Edmund Hillary reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.

The atmosphere gets thinner the higher you climb, which is why oxygen tanks are used by climbers scaling Mount Everest.

The smallest mountain in the world that has not yet been climbed is Mount Wycheproof in Australia. It stands at only 148 meters (486 feet) above sea level.

On the 16th 1975 May Junko Tabei from Japan became the first woman to reach the summit of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest.

Phu Dorjee was the first Indian to climb the Mt Everest without oxygen in 1984. He had earlier climbed it in 1965. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1965. He died in 1987 in the Kanchanjunga Expedition of Assam Rifles.

There was a first attempt by the Irishman W. H. Green in 1882, but he made it 50 metres short of the true summit.

In 1894, three New Zealanders, Tom Fyfe, James (Jack Clarke) and George Graham successfully reached mount Cook's summit.

The first person to die on Mount Everest was 'Dorje' on the 7th June 1922. He died in an avalanche that also killed six others. He was employed with the 1922 British Mount Everest Expedition.

The first teams to attempt to climb Mount Everest was the British back in 1921. They had a Base Camp as they knew it would be impossible to climb the mountain without having to sleep and rest somewhere on the way up and back down.

Today there are usually four camps used before reaching the summit.

A.S Cheema was the first Indian climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest, he did so on the 20th May 1965

In November 1847, Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India made several observations from the Sawajpore station at the east end of the Himalayas. Kangchenjunga was then considered the highest peak in the world, and with interest he noted a peak (Everest) beyond it, about 230 km (140 mi) away.
In 1856, Andrew Waugh announced Everest (then known as Peak XV) as 8,840 m (29,002 ft) high, after several years of calculations based on observations made by the Great Trigonometric Survey.

Up to the end of 2016 there had been 7,645 ascents of Mount Everest. Only 486 were from woman climbers.
