There is more than one type of psycoactive mushroom, but 'magic mushrooms' usually refer to ones containing the hallucinogens psilocybin and psilocin, and are illegal in most places (but they're pretty easy to find growing wild!). Another mushroom that is psycoactive is amanita muscaria (aka fly agaric). They're the ones with white stalks and bright red tops with white spots on you get in fairy tales. These have a different psycoactive chemical in called muscimol. They also have ibotenic acid in, which is inactive but is turned into muscimol in the human body. These mushrooms are completely legal (in the UK anyway). Also, enough ibotenic acid is left over in your urine to be active, so if you're really desperate you could save your pee! Magic mushrooms are illegal in the US. Some states will charge you with a felony if convicted, in others it may only be a misdemeanor. Since magic mushrooms grow everywhere in America, police will not arrest you for having some growing in your front yard. So, even if the police are ABLE to identify the mushrooms as "magic," then they still cannot arrest you, unless of course you are growing the mushrooms inside your house or otherwise obviously in cultivation. But if you have shrooms that are dried, then you can get charged with possession of an illegal drug, and large amounts could mean 'intent to sell'.
