There could be many reasons for this limit, although it's pretty much just one thing about Neopets that The Neopets Team decided on. It's a dash of reality, considering a person doesn't usually keep too many items on hand. It's also an organizational tool, since having 50 items is a bit messy already.
The Pant Devil will appear in random events and steal a random (usually valuable) item out of your inventory. The more items in your inventory, the higher your chances are of losing something. So, keeping under 50 items in your inventory is usually a good thing!
Luckily, every user has unlimited space in their Safety Deposit box. Any items you want to keep, but don't have room for (or that you don't want) in your inventory can go there for safekeeping.
