As in many British colonies, the settlers from Great Britain took the game of football with them to NZ and played under many different rules in the early and mid-19th century. Eventually the rules became more uniform and it is the rugby code that became most popular throughout NZ by the end of the century. It has been the dominant football code ever since.
over a million
This answer is rediculous - With a NZ population of 4,115,771 (2006 Census) This means that there is one rugby club for every 4 people (male, female, young old, or ancient.)
In 2009 NZRU stated that there were 145,472 active players!
Can someone more informed give me the correct answer?
Just as snow skiing is divided into cross-country and alpine, so is kayaking similarly segmented. First, decide if you want to tackle the speed of white water. If so, you'll want a play boat or a creek boat. You will also need:
If you're not going to paddle white water, consider your environment. Do you intend to enjoy the ocean, rivers, lakes or a combination? Will you want to fish or scuba dive from your kayak? Do you intend to paddle long distances?
Think about these issues as you choose between sit-on-top and sit-in boats.
Sit-on-top kayaks tend to be much more stable and can accommodate nearly any body size. This is what you'll want if you intend to fish or scuba dive from your vessel. Note that some of these boats are inflatable, making storage less of a concern. The downside is that these boats are not always intended for long distances.
If you opt for a sit-in, the next consideration is boat length. The longer the boat, typically, the thinner its width. Longer boats make it easier to handle bigger distances, yet are less stable. The longest boats are typically used for sea kayaking. Shorter boats work best for day paddles on lakes, inlets and flat rivers.
If you're unsure or plan to try a variety of environments, including occasionally the ocean, consider a boat that's around 13 to 14 feet in length, such as the Wilderness Systems Tsunami. A mid-size boat has hatches that seal off storage space where you can stow food and gear for longer trips.
Now that you have a boat, you need power. The most affordable paddles are made of plastic. Pricier, more durable materials include wood, carbon fiber and fiberglass. However, these paddles can cost upwards of $300, so you may want to start with something simple first. Also consider that your stroke will likely improve after your first year or two with the sport. You may find that a shorter paddle better suits you once you become more experienced.
All paddlers need a whistle and a personal flotation device, or PDF, in order to comply with coast guard standards. However, whether you need to invest in and wear a sport-specific vest depends on local laws, so check first. (In some states, you simply need to carry a PDF.)
A helmet is optional and depends on the extremity of your outings. A spray skirt is also up to you. Note that in colder climes, it's considered a must to keep yourself dry.
As for learning about the add-ons, such as a compass or gloves, consider joining a local paddling club to gain experience and local knowledge of your area. This is a fast, fun way to gain comfort with the sport and your gear.
Rugby is New Zealand most popular sport. The All Blacks is the rugby team that represents New Zealand
new zealands famous sport would have to be rugby as we really get into it
go all blacks
The name it is claimed was coined by a journalist from the south west of the Uk. During a phone call to his editor of the newspaper he worked for in 1905 the journalist claims to have said, "the visitors ran like all backs such was their skills". The editor heard "ALL BLACKS". this was printed and the name stuck. This is an important point as at the time the Team were called the "Originals" for the tour and were not dressed in all black but in shades of green. The logo is the Silver fern, Cyathea dealbata. This is classed as the National Flower
Bungee jumping was first commercialized in New Zealand. But a similar form was traditional in Vanuatu as part of cultural ritual.
Whether this is a sport, or an activity is worth considering.
The Haka performed by the All Blacks before games is known as 'Ka Mate' or 'Te Rauparaha's Haka'. In recent years the All Blacks have tried to introduce a new haka called 'Kapa Pango' but this has proved controversial and has yet to win over fans of 'Ka Mate' ( Kaah Mah-teh).
The Irish men's international rugby team have never beaten New Zealand. Munster, an Irish province, had a team that famously beat New Zealand in 1978. The Irish women's international rugby team beat New Zealand at the World Cup on the 5th of August 2014.
The current captain of the New Zealand cricket team is Daniel Vettori.
New Zealand's Women's Rugby team, The Black Ferns (Not to be confused with "The Silver Ferns", which are NZ's netball team) are ranked 1st in the world and are more sucessful than the All Blacks (For the oblivious, New Zealand's Mens team)
The All Blacks and Ireland have met in test matches 21 times but Ireland have never won. The closest Ireland has come is a 10-10 draw in 1973. Irish side, Munster famously beat the All Blacks 12-0 during the New Zealand side's 1978 grand-slam winning tour of Britain and Ireland.
wilfredo benitez of puerto rico won a title at the ripe old age of 17.
Because New Zealanders are touugh! Football players are wussy, American footballers wussy in comparison. New Zealanders have to fight the bitter south, and the only other tough rugby team is South Africa. This is because South Africans have to fight off blicks and lions and some of them live in the desert. Australians don't live in the desert so they aren't tough. So tough Kiwis prefer rugby, and traditionally it involved a lot more fighting and drinking: Kiwis and Australians are good at that. I don't if South Africans are good at drinking but they are also good at fighting. Australia's main sport is Rugby League which is possibly even touugher than Rugby Union.
All Blacks rugby team is from New Zealand. All Blacks rugby team doesn't compete in the World Cup, but it has competed in the Churchil Cup and in the Pacific Nations Cup.
