What are the long-term effects of NuvaRing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I've used the nuva ring for about a year and I've been off it for about a month now. Some noticable side effects I am experiencing is having pregnancy like symptoms. Sore nipples/breast, headaches, fatigue, heartburn, nausea, sensitivity to certain odors, abdominal pain, late/missed period, and bleeding gums. I should have got my period this week but haven't yet, but occording to others experience I've read online some women are having the same side effects after stopping. It's pretty frustrating, because my husband and i wanted to start trying to have a baby and I've taken 3 pregnancy test because of the symptoms I was having, but they were all negative. But from reading others experiences of these same symptoms i feel better knowing i am not the only one who experienced these unfortunate symptoms.
I have had no physical side effects of quitting the nuva ring but my emotions are crazy!! I have felt extremely sad and anxious and confused(a lot of turmoil in my mind) The side effects are supposed to subside after 3 months of quitting any birth control...I can't wait to feel normal again.
I was three days late to put my ring in--two days later it must of come out- because I am pregnant!
After you take out Nuva Ring, you'll probably have your typical withdrawal bleeding. After that, your next period will probably arrive in 4-6 weeks, so it might be a little late, and you might have a bit of spotting that month. As ovulation returns, you might notice some ovulatory cramping and ovulatory cervical discharge, and you might notice that your periods are heavier than they were when on Nuva Ring.

Does NuvaRing cause chest pains?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you're experiencing discomfort due to NuvaRing, it's likely due to the ring rather than the hormones. Most women can use NuvaRing without noticing its presence. But we're all built differently, and some women can feel the ring whenever it's in. Women with frequent constipation may notice that problem more than others.

Before you give up, make sure that you've inserted the ring as high in your vagina as possible. If you're still experiencing discomfort when it's in, and no discomfort during the ring-free week, talk with your health care provider about other options.

Can you use NuvaRing during your period?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. NuvaRing is removed one week per month. This is the week you have your period. You remove the last one, and later put in the new one, based on the schedule on the calendar. Sometimes this means you'll be inserting a new one while you're still bleeding.

Is it possible for a virgin to use a Nuva Ring without breaking the Hymen?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. Your hymen is probably already broken. This can happen from riding a bike, masturbating, riding a horse, etc. Normally doctors want your hymen to be broken in order to give you a pap and pelvic, which is what you will need before you start on the nuva ring.

Will you bleed if you don't put in NuvaRing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, you should put your ring in as scheduled regardless of bleeding. Most women reinsert the next ring while they're still bleeding. You can also insert it early -- no later than seven days after you removed the last ring.

How many years can you be on NuvaRing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Their website doesn't say but I'm pretty sure that you have to be 16 or older.. and nuvering also has more side effects than other birth controls.. so you might want to talk to your doctor first to see what they think would work best for you.. hope this helps!

Does blood clots happen when you take out the nuva ring?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Blood clots in menstrual flow often goes along with heavier flow. Since Nuva Ring lightens vaginal bleeding, it's possible that you're noticing this change because you quit using the ring. If it continues, or if you're having other symptoms like bloating, urinary discomfort, pelvic pain, or pain with intercourse, see your health care provider.

What happens if you remove the nuva ring for one day and then put it back on will i get pregnated?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you do not keep the NuvaRing in for the full three weeks, the hormone levels in your body will drop, increasing your chance of ovulation. If you ovulate, you can become pregnant. I do not recomend taking it out early unless you want to risk getting pregnant.

Could you be pregnant if you use Nuva Ring for birth control and your period was 2 days late and only lasted for 1 to 2 days?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's unlikely. Normally you insert it on the same day of the week, without having to insert it at the exact same time. If you're concerned, use a back up birth control method for the first 7 days of that new cycle.

Is it normal to experience spotting then bleeding during last days of NuvaRing cycle?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. Some women note that bleeding starts later in the ring-free interval than it did in the pill-free week if they were on the birth control pill. Other women note that bleeding starts a little before they remove the ring. If you're in the first three months of use, you may have more unscheduled and unexpected bleeding, and should then settle down into a pattern. If the bleeding is troublesome, occurs mostly during sex, or is accompanied by pain, discharge or fever, then contact your health care provider for advice.

Is it normal if you just started the nuva ring and you were spotting brown blood for the longest time and now you took it out for a week and you have your period for two days and it has stopped?

After my period i stopped using the nuva ring its been 5 weeks and haven't had another period is this normal?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Regardless of how long you used it, when you take out the last ring, you'll probably have your usual withdrawal bleeding. Your next period is likely to arrive in 4-6 weeks, if your periods were regular before you used Nuva Ring. If you had unpredictable periods before, you're likely to return to your previous irregular habit when you stop hormonal birth control.

You took out the Nuva Ring mid month and it was a day 8 on the new ring What are your chances of getting pregnant this month you had sex throughout days 13-16 is there a chance you could get pregnant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you are trying to get pregnant, you should leave the NuvaRing out. There is no sensible reason to use NuvaRing on any schedule when you're trying to get pregnant. Talk with your health care provider to clear up your confusion on this issue, and on how conception happens.

You can skip your period but the wisest thing to do will be keep it in for just another week longer. You can also take it out and then replace it with another one. But most women will have slight break-through bleeding.

Can you use a NuvaRing that has been expired over a year?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The below answer is entirely untrue. If you are on birth control and are using it correctly, you are less than .001% likely to become pregnant, even if sperm is inside of you. A Nuvaring can be used for up to 2-3 months after being expired, but a backup method such as condoms or spermacide are recommended. Keep in mind that when first using the Nuvaring, you must wait 1-2 weeks after putting it in before having unprotected sex. One more thing wrong with the below answer, the last line "Otherwise if you had sex and they didnt [come] then you probably aren't" is also entirely untrue. Pre-ejaculation fluid, commonly called "pre-cum" can contain large amounts of live-sperm, which can lead to pregnancy just as often as regluar "cum". But then again, if you are on birth control, those risks are reduced by up to 99.99%. Answer No matter what if you have unprotected sex, and sperm went into you then you are most likely pregnant. Otherwise if you had sex and they didnt cun then you probably aren't

Can I become pregnant if i inserted NuvaRing 3 days Late?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

While getting pregnant at any time without a permanent form of birth control is a possibility, being a few days behind on birth control or the administration of another method does not make much of a difference, except when the missed medication is at the earliest part of your cycle.

However, with Nuvaring, if the ring is outside the vagina for more than three hours, the contraceptive's ability to work has been compromised. Insert the ring into your vagina as soon as you remember. According to the Full Prescribing Indications provided by Nuvaring and Organon USA, a backup form of birth control should be used for the next seven days. This will give the Nuvaring a chance to re-deliver the appropriate levels of hormones into your system.

The key to this is to leave the ring in your vagina for 7 consecutive days before you can be sure that the hormone has risen to levels appropriate for effective birth control. Use an alternative form of birth control (such as male condoms and spermacide) for the seven days.

Can you use norform while using nuva ring?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You may use Norforms whil using NuvaRing, but this is not a healthy practice. You would not find a female gynecologist who uses these type of products. They are more likely to cause odor or irritation than they are likely to prevent or cure odor.

You are in your 3rd week of NuvaRing and started your period. why?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Nuva Ring has a lower rate of breakthrough bleeding than the most commonly used birth control pills, but spotting in the first three months can occur. If it goes on longer than three months, if it's driving you crazy, or if you have other symptoms like pain or unusual discharge, contact your health care provider for advice and an exam.

Should you consult your doctor before stopping NuvaRing to get pregnant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A woman planning pregnancy may benefit from talking with her health care provider about health steps to take before conceiving, including starting a multivitamin with folic acid, considering whether any immunizations are recommended (such as rubella or varicella), and thinking about whether genetic counseling is a good idea. These recommendations are the same for women using birth control or those who are not.

Why are you bleeding not spotting 2wks after your period you stopped the Nuva Ring 2 months ago and you have been trying to get pregnant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For women who had regular 28-day cycles prior to using Nuva Ring, ovulation usually resumes 2-4 weeks after stopping Nuva Ring. You may have had some ovulation bleeding four weeks after stopping Nuva Ring, and now a period. If the irregular bleeding continues, or if you have other symptoms like unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or pain with sex or urination, contact your health care provider. It makes sense to call your provider now, anyway, to talk about preconception counseling and health measures. Best wishes to you and your family for a healthy pregnancy!

How long does discharge last when your on NuvaRing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you have irregular bleeding or spotting in the first three cycles of NuvaRing, it is likely to improve before the third cycle is done. Brown discharge during the ring free week is common (instead of red) and will stop before or just after the next ring is inserted.

How do you insert NuvaRing?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

you have to manually go and get it...Its not too fun but it must come out
Insert a clean finger into your vagina and "hook" the ring with your finger. If you feel like you can't reach it, squat down to bring the end of the vagina closer to the entrance to hook the ring.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you leave the last NuvaRing in for four weeks, insert the new one immediately. If you did not insert it immediately, you must use a backup method until you've used the ring correctly for seven days.
