Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders that increase one's risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It affects a large number of people in a clustered fashion. In some studies, the prevalence in the USA is calculated as being up to 25% of the population. Symptoms and features are: * Fasting hyperglycemia - diabetes mellitus type 2 or impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or insulin resistance; * High blood pressure; * Central obesity (also known as visceral, male-pattern or apple-shaped adiposity), overweight with fat deposits mainly around the waist; * Decreased HDL cholesterol; * Elevated triglycerides; * Elevated uric acid levels. Associated diseases and signs are: fatty liver (especially in concurrent obesity), progressing to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, hemochromatosis (iron overload); and acanthosis nigricans (a skin condition featuring dark patches). How do you lose weight for obese people?

The brain insists on maintaining the status quo. If a person is obese, for whatever reason that may be, and he tries to diet, as all obese people do and many manage to lose some weight , maybe even a lot of weight, and keep it off for varying periods of time. All those who are overweight or obese are experts on what we should eat, so, why do we eventually put the weight back on, and always a bit more? Any loss of weight is seen by the body as starvation and starts to do many things to get the weight back to the status quo, and the brain works harder and harder to achieve this balance. Not only does it want the balance to be returned, it insists on a bit more weight be added in case of future starvation. Our brain is trying to protect us, and when we lived in caves, it did just that. I am not a medical person, but I am a strong willed person who has become obese and I am unable to maintain weight loss for long. I welcome all replies to my opinion

Yes , you can lose weight. However, when you start eating you may regain the weight and more than you lost because the body thinks it will not get food again for a long time. I don't recommend fasting as a weight loss solution.

Why do you people make fun of obese people?

Why? Because people are insecure about their own faults and they think if they tear down others it will hide what they are insecure about. Then again, some people are just cruel and they get a sick enjoyment out of hurting feelings. Don't be bothered by people like that. They have much worse problems than a few exra pounds, sometimes it just doesn't show on the outside. Try killing them with kindness. Laugh along with them......once the cruel ones see they are not hurting you they'll stop. Pray for them. They need it. Do I sound like Mom and Dad? Good! Listen to them because they're right. Doveshaven -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some individuals view fat people as people who generally lack any form of self-respect. They also perceive fat people as gluttonous food gorging fanatics. Parents, who allow their kids to pig-out and become fat and lazy, are parents who truly do not care about their children's health and welfare. A person who does not take effective care of their personal health and physical appearance is simply inviting others to make a mockery of them. Fat does not come from space and it is not a virus it is generally as a result of the junk that you fill into your stomach. If you are truly upset about people making fun of you, then you should make every effort to eat foods that are nutritious and (fat Free) healthy. People who truly love you would encourage you to develop a healthy lifestyle and not patronize you with myopic emotional platitude.

What are the causes and preventions of obesity?

This is a complex issue, but here is the basic.

For one, our food supply is now more processed and energy densed. It has more calories than less processed food source for an equivalent weight/volumn.

Another issue is society as the US has fewer and fewer jobs that require much physical activities.

So the combination of the 2 would make anyone obese if one doesn't adjust by eating less calories or increasing physical activities.

What might be a reason for recent increases in child and teenage obesity?

Simply eating too many calories and not burning them off. Most people today spend hours and hours sitting and sitting, and eating about as many calories as a marathon runner should eat. I'm not saying ALL do, but a majority does. If they didn't, we wouldn't be this obese.

What are some food that you can serve to an obese person?

This question isn't very specific, but I'll try to answer it to the best of my knowledge. Overweight people normally eat junk food in large amounts. What I mean by junk food is cookies, candy, chocolate, donuts, chips, twinkies, etc. To alter this habit, one must attain abstemious practices (eating in moderation). This will help a whole lot. To put it simply an overweight person will eat... far too much, that is why they have become overweight.

The effects of obesity?

If you are a hundred pounds overweight, for example, it puts extra stress on your heart and other body organs. It is like carrying a hundred pounds of stones around in a pack all your life. Then, if your body has genetic weaknesses, it is made even worse by this extra weight. The best way to lose weight is watch the amount of calories you eat, especially at night when you can't burn them off as easily. Some people eat a big meal before bedtime and it just goes right to their weight problem. If you are a snacker, the same is true. Walk as much as you can during the day. I walk about five miles a day or more in the kind of work I do besides everything else. I don't drive so I walk to anything within a mile or so. You can also get a bike and this will help for longer distances. Dieting probably won't help you in the long run because as soon as you get off the regimen of the diet, you will gain the weight back. Make healthy choices in the foods you eat, well balanced. Remember that all the carbs you eat all turn to sugar in your body. What is not used by your body turns to fat. It all boils down to how much you want to lose weight. You have to have discipline to say no to the wrong foods and excesses.

How does obesity affect spiritual well being?

Many spiritual people are obese, actually. Empathic people often try to absorb the negative energy of others, or illnesses, to relieve the pain or discomfort of others. The stress of being a helper/healer and a person who feels the emotions all around them, will, very often, ease the stress with food or sugar and often caring for others more than themselves.

In turn, the intake of too much food (energy), stress and putting others needs in front of their own . . . spiritual people can become and/or stay obese. Thus, as we progress spiritually, we must learn to put on our own mask first. We spiritual people can help a lot more people if we are healthy first.

You can only love others when you love yourself. Love yourself enough to take care of you.

That doesn't make sense.

This is from Wikipedia:

A 2004 study called the Canadian Community Health Survey, found 23% of Canadians 18 and older were obese and 36% more were overweight (as determined by body mass index). In children and adolescents, 8% were obese and 18% overweight. Rates of obesity varied significantly between the province, from an obesity rate of 19% in British Columbia to a rate of 34% in Newfoundland and Labrador. The prevalence of obesity in the two most populated provinces, Ontario and Quebec, matched those of thirty US states, at a level equal to or greater than 25%. The study found people that live in cities (Census Metropolitan Areas) had significantly lower obesity rates in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. In Quebec the relationship approached significance (p=0.8), while in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan the rate of obesity did not vary significantly between CMAs and rural areas.[4]

A 2005 report released by the Canadian government's Economics Division reported that "In 2004, approximately 6.8 million Canadian adults aged 20 to 64 were overweight, and an additional 4.5 million were obese. Roughly speaking, an adult male is considered overweight when his body weight exceeds the maximum desirable weight for his height, and obese when his body weight is 20% or more over this desirable weight. A similar guideline holds true for women, but at a threshold of 25% rather than 20%. Dramatic increases in overweight and obesity among Canadians over the past 30 years have been deemed to constitute an epidemic."[5]
