The difference between a spinto and a mezzo would not lie as much in the notes that can be reached, either higher or lower, as in where the voice sounds best. Some people have voices which one teacher might diagnose as a mezzo, while another teacher might diagnose as a dramatic soprano, or at least a spinto. Some roles, such as Carmen or Santuzza have historically been sung by both mezzos and sopranos. Singers such as Grace Bumbry have started as mezzos, and later moved up to some soprano roles. For some people the choice is clear, for other people, it is a question that can only be answered over time.
