The great Indian filmmaker received an honorary Academy Award on March 30, 1992 "in recognition of his rare mastery of the art of motion pictures, and of his profound humanitarian outlook, which has had an indelible influence on filmmakers and audiences throughout the world."

Ray did not attend the ceremony because he was ill, but he gave an acceptance speech by a satellite feed from his home. He died in Calcutta, India, several weeks later.

Here's a partial list: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) won for Best Costume Design. Babe(1995) won for Best Visual Effects. Shine (1996) won Best Actor. Is Moulin Rouge! (2001) considered Australian? It won for Art Direction and Costume Design. The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) won Linda Hunt the Best Supporting Actress award. The Piano (1993) won Best Actress, Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay. Happy Feet (2006) won Best Animated Feature.

The Academy Award for Best Picture of 2008 went to Slumdog Millionaire. It won 8 Oscars.

The obvious answer is that Gran Tornino wasn't nominated for Best Picture because too few Academy members nominated it. The real question then is: why didn't the Academy like Gran Torino? No one can really no the answer to that, but a good guess is that the politics of the movie run counter to Hollywood's taste. Perhaps Oscar voters got too hung up on the rough edges of Eastwood's Walt Kowalski, or they were too busy fawning over the politics of Frost/Nixon and Milk to notice.

And, finally, the biggest mystery of the evening: Why did George Clooney look so grumpy? Steve Carell has mastered the "faux annoyed" look from the audience, but with Clooney it was quite difficult to discern if this was supposed to be a bit, or if he was serious. The mystery remains unsolved, though there is a clue. On the red carpet, Clooney gave reporters a peek at a metal flask - no doubt filled with delicious Tang - hidden in his jacket. But most likely, he was just contemplating who would be next to get thrown in the pool.

One. Jamie Foxx won the 2004 Best Actor award for his portrayal of Grammy Award-winner ray Charles in the movie biography "Ray." Foxx also was nominated that year in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance opposite Tom Cruise in "Collateral."
