On February 27, 2016, the 87-year-old Italian film composer won his first competitive Academy Award for his dramatic score for Quentin Tarentino's 2015 Western "The Hateful Eight." 16. Nine years earlier, on February 25, 2007, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented an honorary Oscar to Morricone "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music."

Morricone had been nominated for Oscars on five other occasions, for his scores from "Days of Heaven" (1979), "The Mission" (1986), "The Untouchables" (1987), "Bugsy" (1991) and "Malèna" (2000).

He might have been nominated for his score from "Once Upon a Time in America" (1984), but a paperwork fiasco made him ineligible.

There was no character named Oscar in A Fish Called Wanda. Kevin Kline won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for playing Otto in A Fish Called Wanda (1988).
