Believe it or not, none of the "Harry Potter" movies ever won an Academy Award. Six of the films in the series received a total of 12 nominations, listed as follows:

• "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" (2001) -- art direction/set decoration, costume design and original score.
• "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (2004) -- original music score, visual effects.
• "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005) -- art direction/set decoration.
• "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (2009) -- cinematography.
• "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" (2010) -- art direction/set decoration and visual effects.
• "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" (2011) -- art direction/set decoration, visual effects and makeup.

Heath Ledger won the Best Supoorting Actor Award for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008).

Peter Finch is the only posthumous winner of the Best Actor award, though he was alive when his nomination was announced (the only other posthumous winner in any acting category was another Australian, Heath Ledger, who won the Best Supporting Actor award in 2009). The only posthumously nominated performers in this category were James Dean, Spencer Tracy, and Massimo Troisi. Dean was posthumously nominated twice.

The Academy Award for Best Picture of 1957 went to The Bridge on the River Kwai. Producer Sam Spiegel accepted the award.

The Oscar for Best Picture for the 1957 Academy Awards went to 'The Bridge On the River Kwai', directed by David Lean and produced by Sam Spiegel. The film was based on a french novel 'The Bridge Over the River Kwai' written by Pierre Boulle. The other nominated films in that category were 'Peyton Place', 'Sayonara', '12 Angry Men' and 'Witness for the Prosecution'. The Bridge on the River Kwai also won six other Academy Awards that night including Best Actor (Alec Guinness as 'Colonel Nicholson') and Best Writing. The award for best writing went only to the author of the book as the screenwriters Michael Wilson and Carl Foreman were blacklisted at the time for being members of the communist party. In 1984 the screenwriters were awarded the Oscar posthumously for the writing of 'Bridge on the River Kwai'.
