What causes the fear of the dark?

From my understanding, being afraid of the dark is a natural occurance that may be a result of a survival instinct from our primitive ancestors. For example, we didn't know what creatures were out there lurking in the wilderness waiting to eat us, so we had to be on guard to protect ourselves. I dont' think that it is the dark itself as much as it is the "unknown" that resides in the dark.

I am going to take a shot on the anxiety component. Let's discuss "fight, flight, or freeze." Our primitive ancestors as slightly mentioned above had to constantly deal with survival. Our nervous system reacts when there is a threat (i.e. Something hairy with big teeth and claws) and our body reacts by either "fighting (not my choice but only if I had to protect my young), fleeing (more up my alley), or freezing (Hopefully this doesn't happen because then you'll end up as chop suey for tigers). Your body naturally responds (i.e. allows your lungs to take in more air, digestive system shuts down (yeah now wouldn't be the time for accidents unless of course you do that freezing thing that I mentioned earlier). Anyway this is all to prepare your body to come out alive. After threat is over... Body returns back to homeostasis (balances back out, everything goes back to normal). So, in folks with anxiety disorders, might not have the turn off /go back to normal button. So, then there is an unnatural constant fear...What was that? what's that in the corner? Is that a really big jacket or a monster in my closet?

Although this might not answer the question as in detail or as scientific as you would like, it might give you some idea. Hope it helps!!!

Who said the only thing we have to fearis fear itself?

Franklin D Roosevelt at his first inaugural speech. "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself!" Speaking of the depression and the prospect of turning the U.S. economy around.

Actually Francis Bacon said it about 400 years ago in his essay on Tribute. He was talking about fortune and change of fortune and how a man with fortitude will not be shaken. Whereas a person who is fearful will suffer much by these changes. He referred to fear as the inner enemy and said "Nothing is to be feared but fear itself. Nothing grievous but to yield to grief" FDR probably learned this in grammar school

In all reality you are both correct. While Francis Bacon did say this quote, so did Franklin D. Roosevelt. While the quote was quoted from Francis Bacon by Franklin Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt did say it in his inaugural speech so technically, both of you are correct!

i have the answer to apex simplified

Confidence was needed to overcome the Depression.

Yes it is, for example my cat finds all kinds of plastic and she rubs her nose on it and licks it for hours. She tries to find plastic anywhere. So now we have to leave it in places where she can't get to it. Only reason is because she can swallow it and probably choke on it.

Why are people scared of gay people?

Although many people have no issues with gay or bisexual people, this is not always the case.

People hate or dislike gays, lesbians, and bisexuals and/or gayness for a variety of reasons; some of these may be:

  • They are uncomfortable with or afraid of people who are different than them, whether they are gay, straight or bisexual.
  • They are gay themselves and trying to disguise their sexuality by being loudly anti-homosexual.
  • They are trying to affirm their (hetero)sexuality to those around them.
  • They believe that their religion prohibits homosexuality and/or that it is wrong for moral reasons.

Often those with prejudices got them from their parents or have absorbed them from their local environment (culture, neighborhood, circle of friends). Some of these just don't know any better. We must also make a distinction between a dislike of gayness and a dislike of gay people. You can hate cigarettes and tobacco use, for instance, without hating people who smoke, and thus the same principle applies here

Quite lieterally, the distrust of anyone or anything that is different is normal animal behavior. People refer to it as stranger danger, and as such it becomes quite acceptable. It is when that difference is identified that it becomes "wrong" or "right." The big problem here is that "wrong" and "right" are measurements from a moral ruler, and no two moral rulers are exactly the same.

While it is perfectly acceptable and justifiable to determin that a course of behavior is not acceptable for the individual as determined by that individual (homosexuality and homophobia in this instance), any outward expression or pressing of that determination onto others is not acceptable.

How do you overcome social phobia?

How do you conquer socil phobia?

Exposure therapy.

Force yourself into social situations , this means that you will have to face your fears full on.

You will go into overdrive you will start panicking, your mouth will turn dry hands clammy you will struggle to breathe and relentless paranoia that people are staring\mocking\focusing on you will attack you all at once.

But then, this storm will recede, and you will regain your breath and start to calm down, kind of like after an adrenaline rush.

Keep forcing yourself into social situations again and again, eventually you will see how irrational your fear is,and episodes like the one described above will become less intense, and then stop happening altogether. You will start seeing that there is no real threat, and thus you will overcome this "Social Phobia".
I would also like to add that you should start off SMALL,just little things, and then move on to the bigger ones.
And you could ask someone to accompany you first - but you MUST NOT LET YOURSELF BECOME ATTACHED! You will have to retain your independence to complete this challenge.

Also what helps is to take stoic or logical approaches to situations like these.

Only use medication as the utmost LAST option.
Social Phobia can be a result of some other mental illness, which sometimes are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. If you think this is the case go to a Doctor, but ask if you can be treated with therapies first instead of jumping for medication, trust me.

Also:
This is not to be taken as professional advice i am no doctor, and this is not a professional opinion! You should go see a doctor for some real help.

What is it called when you are scared of people?

I believe this is a mixture of 2 phobias, as opposed to a specific phobia, my opinion is that it is Claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces) and Demophobia(fear of crowds/mobs).

I get this sort of thing when around people...it's as if they're in my bubble and I haven't consciously allowed them in, i.e. if they hug me as opposed to me hugging them - but I usually have bigger anxieties when it's toward my face. I get short of breath, and sometimes get hot flushes/perspiration (especially in places like Supermarkets and Shopping Centres [Malls]).

As for tackling this sort of phobia/anxiety, I would go to a Doctor/GP and ask for a referral to the relevent specialist.

Hope this helps.
