Two smaller hired sloops were therefore put under the command of Lieutenant Robert Maynard, with instructions from Spotswood to hunt down and destroy Blackbeard, offering a reward of £100, and smaller sums for the lesser crew members.

Islamist militant groups like al-Shabaab have strong and barbaric punishments for piracy. They hacked pirates' limbs off, viciously confiscated their loot, and raided their hideouts. It was more lenient, more secular governments in Mogadishu that were less effective in or less desirous of limiting piracy. Back in the 2006 and 2007, there was a debate over whether the US should support the al-Shabaab government because of the diminution of piracy in Somalia under their control (which is vital for petroleum shipping). However, al-Shabaab's connections to al-Qaeda and their authoritarian style of government ultimately led the US to remain neutral in the Somali civil wars.
