Through 1971, the Plymouth Road Runner and GTX were separate models. Traditionally the VIN of the Road Runner started with RM23, and the GTX started with RS23. The base Road Runner came standard with a 383ci engine and a minimum of options. The GTX came standard with the 440ci engine, and was appointed with several standard options. The Road Runner was the cheap muscle car, and the GTX was the luxury muscle car.

This changed in 1972 as the GTX was dropped as a stand alone model and the 400ci engine became standard for the Road Runner. If you ordered a Road Runner with the one of two 440ci engine options that year, the model became a Road Runner GTX, included additional badging as such. There were 672 Road Runner GTXs produced in 1972. 219 were 4spd manuals, and 453 were automatics.

In 1973 and 74, the 318ci engine became standard in the Road Runner. Again, if you ordered the 440ci engine, your Road Runner became a Road Runner GTX. In 1973, 749 Road Runner GTXs were produced. And in 1974, 386 Road Runner GTXs were produced. All 1973/74s were automatics.

So the final answer is: There were 1,807 Road Runner GTXs produced from 1972 through 1974.

The model name for all "U" and "V" engine coded '72-74 RM23/RM21s is "Road Runner GTX". This official model name change is as described by existing Chrysler documentation;

"Road Runner will become a Road Runner GTX when it is ordered with either the 440 4-barrel or 440 6-barrel optional engines"

A roadrunner horn is not worth as much as people think. The first roadrunner " beep beep " horn was put on a 1968 roadrunner. It was originally flat black in color. Every model year after 1968, the " beep beep " horns were lavender in color and had a factory sticker placed on them saying " voice of roadrunner ". I have seen both horns go for as much as $150.00, but of course, you have to find someone willing to pay that for it to be worth it !

For 72-74', any Road Runner ordered with the 440HP engine was officially named "Road Runner GTX".

There are kits that have specific tools that you can use to help you in removing the dash. You can also ask a local automotive body specialist the process they use to remove the dash.

There were only two body options for the Road Runner-Hardtop and Coupe (not including the Convertible in 1970). The only noticeable difference between the two are the rear side windows. On a Hardtop, the side windows roll down completely, whereas on the Coupe these windows simply push out at the back, leaving the B-pillar visible. The Hardtop is also sometimes known as a "post" car. As it is, the Coupe is slightly lighter.

Technically, NONE. It was only an option package on the Volare model. You would need to discover how many Volares were equipped with this package, actually.

GTX comes with a hemi standard. Roadrunner does not.

Actually the standard engine for the GTX was the 440-4bbl, the 426 HEMI was an option, throughout it's entire production run as a stand-alone model from 67-71'. The 440 6bbl was also available as an option in 70-71'. The GTX was considered the "Gentleman's muscle car" as it had a higher trim level and price tag.

The Road Runner in those years was initially a bare-bones/big motor version of the GTX, 383HP being the standard engine in 68', the 426 Hemi and, from 69 1/2', the 440 6bbl were optional up until 71'. It was marketed toward a younger crowd. For 72-74', with the GTX discontinued as a stand-model, Road Runners ordered with the optional 440HP engine were called a "Road Runner GTX".

Should operate at 180 > 185 F. for std set up. I have a 73 Satellite sebring with 400 4bbl & run std specs. Have accurate temp guage ( after market ) & she runs from 175 to 185, even in the 40 + degrees ( celcius ) heat we get here in Australia.
