Political Parties

The National Union Party was a political party in the United States that existed during the American Civil War. It was formed in 1864 and consisted of Republicans and War Democrats who supported President Abraham Lincoln's efforts to preserve the Union. The party dissolved after the Civil War ended in 1865.

Canada's Federal Liberal Party is Canada's oldest still existing party, though they are going through a rough patch. They ruled Canada for most of the 20th century making Canada effectively a single party state in many ways.

Politically they wanted and want Liberalized Trade with the USA and closer ties to the USA rather than Britain, smaller military, more social programs and more rights for some of Canada's founding peoples. The 20th century saw them achieve most of that and the Canada we have today is for the most part their creation. Key beliefs have been flexible to enable them to maintain power.

Their largest block of support has come from French Quebec with much less support in Western Canada, which was not needed in our system.

During 1860, the Democrats had splintered into three parties. Stephan A. Douglas ran as the "official" Democrat opponent to Lincoln. The new Constitutional Liberty Party placed John Bell of Tennessee as their candidate and John Breckinridge ran as a Liberty Party candidate.In the 1864 US presidential race, Lincoln's only opponent was former general George B. McClellan.

Socialist Left Party - Norway - was created in 1975.

Democratic Republican Union was created on 1945-12-18.

John Lewis is a democrat. His political party is the democrats. He has run for president twice without success for the democrats and is a very well-known politician.

Radical Republicans believed blacks were entitled to the same political rights as whites. They believed the Confederates were traitors and that they should be punished for their roles in the American Civil War. Following Lincolnâ??s assassination, they vigorously opposed President Johnsonâ??s lenient approach to the south and engaged in a fierce political battle with him.

He was the last president who was neither; he was a Whig.

The most basic answer is that the people rule themselves. Sometimes everyone takes part as in a direct democracy, although this is rarely practical today. Most societies use some form of representative democracy where elected officials carry out the work of government on our behalf. It is a whole different can of worms about how well we the people oversee our elected officials.

New Communist Party of the Netherlands was created in 1992.

Lincoln was a member of the Republican Party of 1854, but is was a VERY different Republican Party than we have today.

The most important organizations consisting of people who hold similar political beliefs are called POLITICAL PARTIES. However, there are numerous smaller local groups which are simply civil society or advocacy groups that are united by their political beliefs on one or more issues.
