You are polluting, in some way, your environment by simply getting on with your day-to-day life. It is how human civilisation deals with the overall picture, that matters.

Most of the pollution made in the world comes from places that are highly developed. These are countries like America, Britain and China which happen to all be very industrial and they have a good economy with a high country income. Nearly a third of the pollution of the world is from America, making it the highest polluted area on the Earth. However places like Africa, India and Tebet are the complete opposite. They are not very industrial and their countries are rather poor recieveing a incredibily low income, if any. Because of this, you wouldn't find that these countries are very polluted at all.

Effects of Land Pollution

1. Effects on Climate

Land pollution can affect the general environment of the Earth. Land pollutions leads to loss in the forest cover of Earth. This is in turn going to affect the amount of rain. Less rains mean lesser vegetation. The effect of all different kinds of pollution will eventually lead to problems like acid rains, greenhouse effect, global warming. All of these problems have already initiated and need to be curbed before the situation runs out of control.

2. Extinction of Species

One of the major causes of concern is the extinction of species. Species are pushed towards endangerment and extinction primarily by two processes. Habitat fragmentation is the fragmentation of the natural habitat of an organism; cause primarily by urban sprawl. Habitat destruction, on the other hand, is when land clearing adversely affects animals special such that their natural habitat is lost. Both the actions can cause some species to go extinct and others to become invasive.

3. Biomagnification

Biomagnification is the process in which certain non-biodegradable substances go on accumulating in the food-chain (in one or more species). The most common example is of methylmercury in fish and mercury in eagles. Not only does biomagnification put the particular species at risk, it puts all the species above and below it at risk, and ultimately affects the food pyramid.

4. Effects on Biodiversity

Species extinction and biomagnification is going to overthrow the balance of nature very significantly. The main reason for this is disturbance created in the food chain. To give you a very simple example - on account of biomagnification of mercury in eagles, they might go extinct in the subsequent years. However, we know eagles prey on snakes. Less (or no) eagles will then result in more number of snakes!

As you may have realized, land pollution is indeed going to affect a lot more things than we though it will. Hence, I leave you with some corrective measure you can take on a personal level to reduce land pollution.

•Encourage organic farming - buy organic food

•Proper garbage disposal - separate your garbage before you give it to the garbage collector; and strictly say NO to plastic

•Encourage recycling - buy recycled products, notebooks, paper, etc.

•Restrict use of herbicides and pesticides - they are not only used in farm, but in your own backyard as well

If we reduce our contribution to garbage and litter, therein itself we will be able to significantly reduce land pollution and probably curb it entirely in the near future. Also do realize this isn't only about land pollution; it is about all kinds of pollution. We need to take steps to prevent damaging our Earth. We have no other place to go.

Reduction at source is always the most efficient mean of conservation. By re-think the water usage activity, consider how the pollutant would leak out and require the water cleaning and reduce the leak would yield lesser water consumption and net amount of pollutant release.

Our responsibility is changing because many people are trying to stop water pollution and are trying their best to reduce it but not every one feels strongly on stopping it and they are continually polluting the water and making it harder for the people that are trying to stop the pollution or reverse it and they are protesting to save rivers oceans and lakes so why pollute when it just effects you.

You can't beat a solution of bleach and water, but be careful! Too much bleach could take color out of materials. NEVER use bleach on carpeting. There are many disinfectents that are on the grocery store shelf that will also work. We live in a society full of antibacterial products (which, by the way is not good for humans and we carry a natural and good bacteria on our skin.) Marcy In addition: Hospitals use a 10% bleach to 90% water solution in a spray bottle. This will sterilize the area sufficiently. spray the area, brush clean or use a broom and rinse with water. We used on the ambulance to sterilize where blood was spilled. It works on any surface.

Yes, I'm aware of it. I live just outside Vancouver, British Columbia and we have a beautiful river 'Coquitlam River' which has been polluted in the past by pigs of nature (meaning humans.) Our community banned together and clean it up. Many of the school kids are so up-beat regarding their environment that they will clean up beaches, rivers, creeks and forests. They spend long hours doing so and it's all volunteer work. If all of us keep our garbage where it belongs, give at least one or two hours a week to clean up any creek or river close to where they live (including lakes) then this would be a better world. It can be done because we do it here!
