1990 Bonneville won't start when cold but runs fine when hot plug in block heater or heated garage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are a couple possibilities:

Start with a fuel line de-icer in case you have a little water in the fuel and it's freezing. Water builds up from condensation, much the same as water builds up around your glass when it's hot in the summer. Gasoline manufacturers do NOT put water in your fuel, no matter what your "expert" friends say.

If that doesn't help, try a tune-up. Plugs & wires can sometimes help by giving a hotter spark. Starting cold is difficult on your engine and you need to make sure it has all the help you can give it.

Last, if nothing else helps, check the compression. If compression is low the engine will be difficult to start and nearly impossible when it's cold.

A rotten egg smell from the exhaust usually means there is to much sulfur mixed in the gas. Try changing brands. Different parts of the country have different blends for different seasons.

What does Bonneville mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I believe the word comes from German; Bonne (good) ville (town). Pontiac surely picked this name in 1957 to be associated with the Bonneville salt flats, and the high performance the name inferred. Other classis Pontiac names such as GTO, Trans Am, Formula, Grand Prix, Lemans, ect all are race inspired.

Opinion:

I Wish they would bring the classic names back. Pontiac tried this stupid numerical naming routine in the early 1980 with cars like the 6000, j2000, t1000, and it failed miserably. But I guess the new top brass at GM doesn't remember or care about heritage, only wanting to look "euro" to young buyers, so we get things like the G6, G5, G8. Good cars but no "personality"-something that has plauged GM offerings since the Rodger Smith era. Don't get me started about the 2004-2006 GTO, it was a fine car but certainly lacked the style needed to carry the nameplate most reviered by Pontiac diehards.

How do one change the thermostat in a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Disconnect negative battery terminal for your safety. Follow directions to remove the upper radiator hose. Inside the metal pipe on the engine where you removed the hose, is where you will find the thermostat. You will need a 10mm socket with an extension arm to remove the two bolts. Pull out the thermostat, noting it's position, and push in the new thermostat with new gasket attached and screw back together. Replace hose and refill coolant.

How do you replace engine mount on Pontiac Bonneville gxp?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Just paid dealer 500.00 to replace the front engine mount. they said it took 2.5 hours. Looks pretty simple to get to under a plastic panel underneath theradiator toward the front of the engine. I suspect it takes about 45 min. there is lots of room under there. you will need to jack up the engine with out wrecking any thing though. If it fails again I'll do it my self.

Gm dealer did diagnose and repair the problem quickly. Same day service. We thought the transmission was going bad. We did have that serviced for 400.00 also. Total $900.00. And GM wonders why no one is buying their cars. They charge double for service. The car is working though. Nice car if you can afford it.

How do you change the belt on a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

think it is the same as 1998

Turn the belt tensioner counterclockwise using breaker bar, so you have good leverage, and remove the belt from the accessories. The front engine mount has three legs that connect to the front of the engine (on the passenger side of the car). You have to remove the lowest of the three mounting bolts done from the under side of the car - or - (with your wheels turned to the far right you can remove the plastic shield in the wheel well and with a long extension & breaker bar remove the lower mount bolt). There is a round tube spacer in between the engine block on this bolt of the engine mount that you take out, and you can remove and replace the belt with the spacer removed. It took me about 1 hr to change mine on my 98 Bonneville. If you go though the wheel well as I did you will need a couple of long extensions and a 18mm deep socket. Clean the spacer you removed well to make it easier to reinstall as it is a tight fit.

Do 1993 VW Passat GLX have electrical problems?

Mine certainly does. No dash lights. Passenger side power window quit working a few days ago. Interior light doesn't come on when driver's door opened, but it does for other doors. A bunch of minor stuff.

My son has a 93 GLS and (crossed fingers) no problems yet.

Is there a fuse to disengage or turn off the security setting on a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The short answer is "no." If the car won't crank or start at all, check fuse 1A under the dash. If it's open, replace it. If it's not, the VATS system is in either one of two modes: "Tamper", starting disabled until you find the correct key, or "fail enable," which means the VATS system tanked with a valid key in the ignition, which lets you drive normally with the security light on and WITHOUT VATS protection. If you'd like to tank the system permanently, see this page: http://www.12vp.com/info_resistors.htm Good luck.

The main parts of any mobile or stationary air conditioning system are the compressor, hoses/lines, expansion valve, evaporator coil, condenser coil and fans to move air through both coils. You also have various pressure, temperature, and on/off switches that controls the system. An air conditioning system is a fairly simple system.
