How good is a Pontiac Bonneville?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

That's a very subjective question, that has lots of potential answers based on general reliability, comfort, performance, etc., but for simplicity's sake, I'll assume you're referring to general reliability and I'll limit my comments to the most recent generations (1992-1999 and 2000-2005) of the car.

Most of these cars are powered by GM's 3800 V6 engine, which is highly reliable. With good maintenance, these engines can easily run 200,000 miles or more. They're also very fuel efficient. Mine gets around 20 mpg in town and over 30 on the highway. The 3800 was one GM's 'bread and butter' engines from the late '80s until it was discontinued in 2009, so new and used replacement parts are plentiful.

How do you replace a thermostate on a 1998 Bonneville?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

First, drain off the radiator fluid to a level below the upper radiator hose. Then disconnect the hose from the water neck on the engine block (and from the radiator if you wish). Remove the water neck, and the thermostat is right there to replace (under the water neck on the engine intake). After replacing the thermostat and bolting down the water neck, reconnect the upper radiator hose, etc, warm the car up. add radiator fluid, then be sure to loosen the screw on the water neck that allows any trapped air in the water neck to escape. You should see a stream of radiator fluid exiting the vent on the water neck. Retighten the vent screw, and fill the radiator to the top and replace the pressure cap, and you should be good for a long time.

Why does a 1995 Bonneville shut off going down the road then start right back up?

I have a 1996 Bonneville and my car has been doing that for two yeas now, actually I just got a ticket this morning cause I got mad and stomped the gas, Ive had enough, just wanted to let you know i have put 2000.00 into finding this problem and have come to the conclusion that I have a "Bad" car. I have tried replacing so many parts its not funny. I have to say the car keeps going but it stalls constantly. (I hate it)

Please don't do what I did, 2000.00 dollars to a really good mechanic that I trust with all my heart. We can't find it! Im going to just have to give up and sell the car, or junk it. My patience is no longer anymore.

I have a 1993 Bonneville that seems to have the same problem. My father is a mechnic and he believes that either the TPS sensor is bad. But when I get the oil changed it seems to run better. I'm sorry if my answer doesn't help.

How do you remove the rear seat on a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I would think the seat bottom is mounted by two clips, one at each side. Push the front of the seat bottom very very firmly down, then rearward, then up to release the clip.

With the seat bottom out, it will be easier to get the seatback out.

For the answer to this question, look in your owner's manual. Don't have one then get one. You need an owner's manual for the maintenance schedule and for questions just like this. Sources for a manual are: Dealer, Salvage Yard, E-Bay, and many on-line sites. Here is one site. http://www.samarins.com/maintenance/manual.html

had this problem myself with the power window ghost, the car will start but the windows and the radio would not operate due to a bad ground in the fuse box

and corroded wires/plate in the "trunk line" which is located under the carpet next to the kick plate of the rocker panel (about 8'' in front of emergency brake pedal) on my 97 Bonneville SE

Can you bypass the supercharger on a 1993 Buick Park Avenue?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, on a Series One 3800 V6 use a shorter belt... AutoZone Duralast Multi-V belt Part Number 795K6.. which is basically a 79 1/2 inch belt. I routed the belt exactly as the diagram shows, just omitting the Supercharger. I took it to a mechanic I trust afterward (even though he said it couldn't be done) so he could take a look and make sure I wasn't going to blow the motor. He said that all his references showed no danger, just that the performance would be "a little less peppy", and since then I've driven 1,000+ miles and everything seems to be running along just fine.

Please note: there is a power steering line that the belt may rub against so adjust by bending that metal hose very gently upward with a crow bar until the belt is clear (maybe 1/4 inch).

On a Series Two 3800 V6 supercharged engine, the supercharger has it's own separate accessory belt which can simply be removed and the car will run just fine, the computer adjusts automatically and there are no intake manifold problems.

How do you remove the pulley from an automatic tensioner on a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville?

User Avatar

Asked by Fbman561

The bolt has left-hand threads, and requires a lot of torque. Turn counter-clock-wise to loosen/remove the serpentine belt, then use a cheater-bar on your wrench to loosen the pulley-bolt (turning clock-wise).

Why are the interior lights not working on your 1994 Suburban?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

AnswerCheck the fuse

Check the control switch on dash (if any) labeled with a light bulb symbol

My Interior lights worked when I turned them on manually with the roll switch, but when I set the switch to neutral and placed the auto switch to on, so that when the doors were opened the light should come on, they would not.

Answer: The little push switch located on the side of the dash when the door is closed its pressed in by the door, when the door is open the switch springs out and the light comes on. If this switch is bad or has a short (jiggle) interior lights wont work when door is open and dash is set to AUTO. Replace!

How do you use seafoam injector cleaner in a 1999 Bonneville ssei?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I've heard of using Seafoam as both a crankcase additive and as a fuel additive, mostly in

older Subaru's, if memory serves.

I'd suggest GOOGLING Seafoam and doing as much research as I could. I'd also check out their website.
