Portugal has no current king or queen, because the monarchy was ended as a form of government in the early 20th century. Portugal's current political system is the parliamentary republic. But royal claims to the throne of Portugal are maintained by the House of Bragança. There are two claimants. The first claimant is Dom Duarte Pio, 24th Duke of Braganza[Dom Duarte Pio João Miguel Gabriel Rafael de Bragança, b. May 15, 1945]. The Second is the heir to Maria Pia, Duchess of Braganza, H.R.H Dom Rosaria Poidimani, who was recognized by the Catholic Church. Maria Pia is the illegitimate child of King Carlos I. Both claimants have supporters and court cases- the claims are unresolved.

Specifically, Manuel II [March 19, 1889-July 2, 1932] was the 34th and last King of Portugal and the Algarves [Reino Unido de Portugal e Algarves]. He reigned from February 1, 1908 to October 4, 1910. The October 5th Revolution overthrew the monarchy. Manuel II escaped to Gibraltar in the royal yacht, 'Amélia IV'.

The former king died suddenly from tracheal edema at his residence, Fulwell Lodge, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. His death is considered suspicious, especially after the publication of Harold Brust's 'I Guarded Kings: The Memoirs of a Political Officer' [New York: Hillman-Curl, Inc., 1936]. Brust was with Scotland Yard's special branch for protecting public figures. He mentioned an incident involving an intruder on the grounds of Fulwell Lodge in 1931. Scotland Yard deported the intruder, who was found to be an important member of Carbonária, an organization that was involved in the October 5th Revolution.

Portugal food is not very costly as the population is very poor. Fish is the main part of Portuguese food. Meat, rice and potatoes are also used in large varieties in the Portuguese dishes. Olive oil and wine are blended with most of the dishes.

Breakfast consists of mostly pastries and coffee with any fried vegetable. Um galão is a very famous milky coffee which can also be had for breakfast. Soups are very famous in Portugal. Caldo verde is a very thick vegetable soup served with fried potatoes. Sopa à alentejana is a garlic and bread soup and served with poached Tuna, bacalhau, tuna, crayfish, mullet, crab, clams, barnacles and prawns are widely used in the dishes. Portuguese bacalhau cooked with potatoes onions, hard boiled eggs and olives is just mouth watering. Grilled and barbequed Sardine is also main part of Portugal cuisine.

Portugese don't like vegetable in their meal so it is a better idea to eat salads made of tomatoes, onions and olive oil. Some parts of Portugal use vegetables in Portugal dishes like omelets, chips and salads. Portuguese like to eat meat and chicken. Meat is generally served with piri piri sauce which is made of chilli and tomato.

Bacalhau, is the national dish of Portugal. This dish of salted cod was eated long back when Portuguese fishing boats reached Newfoundland. "Cozido à portuguesa," is a famous dish made of vegetables and meat. Pork is cooked in various ways. Roasted duckling which is known as "leitão assado" is mostly eaten in the northern part of the country.

Thousands of people were tortured to death or burned alive for the "crime" of trying to practice the religion of their ancestors.

Cecil Roth in "History of the Marranos," page 143, cites the Church authority Amadeo de los Rios as giving the figures of 28,540 burned alive, and 308,847 punished in torture and other cruel ways. These figures are exclusively for Jews up to 1525, in less than half a century of existence, implying that the true figures are larger even than Llorente quoted.

The Iberian lynx [Lynx pardinus] and the Iberian wolf [Canis lupus signatus] are two of Portugal's most interesting animals. They're interesting because of their past, their present, and their public appeal. Specifically, both are native to the Iberian Peninsula. In fact, both used to be found throughout Portugal and Spain before the 20th century.

Both now are considered endangered species. In fact, the Iberian lynx is known as the world's most endangered cat family member. Its numbers are so low that its disappearance would be the first feline extinction since the prehistoric demise of the saber-toothed tiger [Smilodon] 10,000 years ago.

But there's hope for the survival of both animals. Both generate passionate interest and concrete action by scientists, the general public, and amateur conservationists.
