These lyrics come from the song "1999" by Prince, and while they were written in 1982, they refer to the mistaken belief that some people had back then-- a belief that the world would end at the conclusion of the 20th century (at the end of 1999). The song, which is joking about that belief, says that since we may have no time left when 2000 comes, we may as well take advantage of the time we have, by partying and having fun. Of course, the world did not end at the conclusion of 1999, but the song remains a great party anthem, and an invitation to have a good time while you still can.

Prince Rogers Nelson (his real name, by the way), studied with Larry Graham (a former member of Sly and the Family Stone) who became a Jehovah's Witness about 30 years ago. Prince did this in honor of his promise to his dying mother, who herself was a Jehovah's Witness. Appearantly, what he learned motivated him to make some changes, because he made many adjustments in what he would and would not do on stage, including his wardrobe and song lyrics. Prince become a baptised Jehovah's Witness about 7 years ago. Whether he is still active in congregation at this time, I do not know.
