How was Death Row inmate Ronnie Lee Gardner executed?
Ronnie Lee Gardner was sentenced to death for the murder of lawyer Michael Burdell (plus maiming of another man and violent kidnap of several others), during an attempted escape while he was in prison awaiting trial for another murder. Burdell, who was unknown to Gardner, seems to have been gunned down for no particular reason.
For the first murder, which occurred during an armed hold-up, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Prior to this he had several other convictions for violent crimes, one of which had left his victim permanently disabled. Thus it was not too surprising that when he was found guilty of the second murder, he was sentenced to death.
However he remained on Death Row for 25 years due a long series of legal motions and appeals, mostly based around his alleged mental incapacities due to a childhood illness, or drug abuse.
All of these appeals failed and on 18 June 2010 he was executed by firing squad. He chose the method of execution himself and it was only still possible because he had chosen it before Utah abolished this method in 2004.

How many inmates are serving life sentences in the us?
This depends on the jurisdiction and the case in question. No general answer is possible. There are 50 states, various territories and the federal government each with their own laws.
For more than a decade, following the lead of states like California, most states now have statutes that mandate "life means life", and you must serve a minimum of 85% of your sentence on lesser crimes. It is only convicts sentenced on older guidelines that have the possibility(near zero) of a parole hearing yielding freedom after 25 years. This applies to the feds as well - the statutes of most(all?) states are generally poor copies of the original Federal ones.
A life sentence in the State of Florida means that the convict will never be free, but in other states it is 25 years.

How many days would you serve for 3 month prison sentence?
It depends on the judicial system of your country. In the UK, if sentenced to 5 years or less, you're automatically given a 50% reduction on your time. In this example - that would mean you would serve approximately 45 days.
HOWEVER - if you misbehave while in prison, you can have days added back onto your sentence - so you could (theoretically) end up serving the 3 months - and more if the bad behaviour was severe enough !

Where is the biggest prison in the US?
I know several: The largest prison by population and land area is the Southern Michigan Correctional Facility (JMF) in Jackson. It was actually the largest walled prison in the world for many decades. It is actually several prisons in one, and houses over five thousand inmates. Each of the included prisons is known euphemistically by different names: Quarantine or North Side (male intake for the MDOC), 7-Block, 6-Block, 11-Block, etc. It is currently closed, a common tactic of the MDOC as the buildings are condemned periodically by the state. However, the MDOC, using inmate labor "remodels" the facility, changes the name and address and reopens it within a year or two. The largest prison building in the US is Stateville Correctional Center north of Joliet, Illinois. Stateville is built on the panopticon plan, with a central guard house surronded on all sides by tiers (floors or levels) of cells, and houses approzimately 2,700 inmate. Pelican Bay Penitentiary is one of the largest high security prisons in the US. It is comprised of 275 acres and houses 3,461 inmates, mostly with gang affilitions.
