Was Gene Autry's horse a quarter horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Tennessee Walkers.

Champion appeared with Gene Autry as his partner and sidekick throughout their legendary career in film, radio, and television.

Original Champion in Home on the Prairie, 1939 There were three "official" Champions that performed in Autry films and several specialized Champions, such as Little Champ, Lindy Champion, Touring Champion, and Champion Three. Other horses, for which we have no documentation at this time, served as doubles for movie stunts and personal appearances. The Original Champion was sorrel-colored, had a blaze down his face and white stockings on all his legs except the right front. His first onscreen credit was for 1935's Melody Trail. He died while Gene was in the service.

Champion Jr., c. 1950 Gene's second screen horse was Champion Jr., a lighter sorrel with four stockings and a narrow blaze, who appeared in films until 1950. While onscreen with Republic, Champion Jr. was billed as "Wonder Horse of the West," and at Columbia, he was known as "World's Wonder Horse." The third screen horse, Television Champion, costarred in Gene's last films and also appeared on television in The Gene Autry Show and The Adventures of Champion during the fifties. Also a light sorrel with four white stockings, he resembled Champion Jr. but had a thick blaze. In the late forties, Little Champ joined Gene's stable. A well-trained trick pony, this blaze-faced sorrel with four stockings appeared in three of Gene's films and made personal appearances. Rushing from a movie set in Hollywood to his annual appearance at Madison Square Garden for the World's Championship Rodeo in 1940, Lindy Champion made aviation history as the first horse to fly from California to New York. Gene used Lindy, a sorrel with four white stockings and an oval-topped blaze, for personal appearances.

Touring Champion on parade,

c. 1953 Touring Champion and Champion Three were also personal appearance horses. A darker sorrel with four white stockings and a medium-wide blaze, Touring Champion appeared at rodeos and stage shows in the late forties and fifties and has his hoof prints next to Gene's handprints at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Champion Three appeared with Gene on the road from the late fifties until 1960, when the sorrel with four white stockings and a crooked blaze retired happily to Gene's Melody Ranch in Newhall, California, where he died in 1990.

Touring Champion taking tea at London's Savoy Hotel, 1953 Collectively, the Champions performed the world's largest repertory of horse tricks, including dancing the hula and the Charleston, jumping through a ring of fire, and playing dead. Greeting crowds from Brownwood, Texas, to Dublin, Ireland, Touring Champion even enjoyed a proper high tea at the Savoy in London. Always popular, Champion received thousands of fan letters each month, proving that the World's Wonder Horse was an important element in the Singing Cowboy's success. Throughout their careers, Gene Autry and Champion were featured in dime novels, children's stories, and comic books. Champion even received equal billing with Gene above the leading ladies on movie posters and lobby cards promoting Autry films.

Is a quarter horse a warmblood horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Quarter horses' temperaments vary; it is not a breed with an easily predictable temperament. Some quarters (particularly older ones) are very quiet and make ideal trail or pleasure riding horses, but there are a lot of working quarter horses and competition horses who should only be ridden by an experienced horseperson. You would need to evaluate the temperament based on what the horse's owner says, or by trying the particular horse you're interested in.

What is the average top speed of a American quarter horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For generations of horses now the American Quarter Horse has been bred for speed and sprinting. This breed has what is known as "quick twitch muscles". This makes for a good sprinter, excellent corner turner, and 'stop on a dime' ability. The quick twitch muscles are different in the way the electricity is fired into the muscle itself. And it is what makes this breed one of the most versitile on earth.

Why is a quarterhorse called a quarter horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Quarter horses are so called because of their speed at sprinting (galloping) a quarter-mile. Some say that the name comes from the hefty hind-quarters of the horse; others say that the breed is one-quarter each of four other breeds, including the Thoroughbred.

Nonetheless, it is the quarter-mile speed which gives the quarter horse its name.

What is the difference between a Quarter Horse and a Paint horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Very little. The Paint horse began as Quarter Horses that had excessive white markings, in Paint talk these are called 'cropouts'. Two solid colored QHs can and do quite ofter produce a foal that is very colorful. The AQHA has color restrictions, so many of these very nice 'cropouts' were not accepted for registration, making their value much less. So the American Paint Horse Association was born. Since 1965 these wonderful, colorful horses have grown in popularity for their kindness, versatility and beautiful coats.

What do you get when you breed a quarter horse with a miniuter horse?

User Avatar

Because of the divergence in size this would probably require artificial insemination.

The resulting foal could not me registered with either the AQHA, SQHA or the AMHA or AMHR. The resulting foal might make a dandy riding pony...but the real question

is whether the animal will have any real value in a market where even registered foals often have very little value.

Where did the American Quarter Horses come from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The American Quarter Horse is one of the few breeds of horses that has it's origins in America. Wild ferel horses of the American plains breed to European imports and mixed in some Thoroughbred blood made the beginings of the Quarter Horse breed. The King Ranch in Texas had much to do with the breed standard. With 3 stallions (QH) and a Thoroughbred stallion named Three Bars the Quarter Horse was official. Now the AQHA registers more horses than any other breed in the world.

Is a mustang horse faster than a quarter horse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Both are great horses to ride. The wild mustang program offers Mustangs for very little money. They have a few regulations you must follow to get one of these horses, but they are available and offer a great value. Mustangs are not all wild and even if they were, they can be trained. I apologize for the first writer's lack of understanding. He doesn't understand much about the equine field.

Where does the quarter horse come from?

Asked by Wiki User

The history of the Quarter horse: In 1604, the first pilgrims brought what many people believe to be the early stock for Thoroughbreds (Arabian and Spanish based stock) to the Virginia settlements. An interest in horse racing rose among the settlers and they found out that the new horse breed were the chosen mount. At only 14 hands, they weren't as tall but fast, capable of racing the quarter mile tracks. Some historians believe that more Spanish and Irish part breeds (known today as Irish Hunters) added height. The result was a taller animal (14.2-16hh) that was capable of working on small farms, being a sure-footed trail mount and a fast horse.

Today's horse is 14-16 hh and can be any color but most commonly bay and chestnut. They are an all-purpose horse that competes in western events, trail riding and for appendix quarter horses, steeple-chasing and racing the quarter mile.

How much does a quarter horse cost?

User Avatar

This all depends upon the horse. If you just want a companion horse, they can be free. If you want a horse that is well-broke, well-trained, safe, and sound it can cost you anywhere from 4,000 dollars to 15,000 dollars. If you want a nice show horse who you can ride in national shows, it can cost anywhere above 20,000 dollars. Obviously the more you pay the more you get with horses.

Can a Thoroughbred crossed with a Quarter Horse enter a race?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, Thoroughbreds come from Turks, Barbs and various Arabian sires and dams. The British had founded the breed as a hybrid of other fast breeds. The Thoroughbred racing industry in North America only allows 100% Thoroughbred bloodlines, parentage assured by DNA testing and registration. Quarter Horse racing is a separate industry. == ==

No it can't have any QH blood to run on the JC track. An Appendix QH can run with AQHA if registered though.
