Quilting

Quilting is simply the stitching and joining of pliable materials, such as cloth, various fabrics, or leather. Usually, smaller shapes are joined to make a larger piece of one to three layers with batting and/or insulation between the layers of fabric. Sewing can be done by hand or by machine. Questions in this topic include types of stitches and patterns, and how to do them.

What is the value of a pfaff tipmatic 6122?

I paid $350 for mine on Craigslist and I see that someone put a Pfaff Select 3.0 (which is functionally the same machine) on Craigslist for $375 so I would say somewhere between $300 and $400.

You could make the argument that the Pfaff Tipmatic 6122 is better than the Pfaff Select 3.0 (even though the 3.0 is the newer machine) because the Pfaff Tipmatic 6122 was one of the last Pfaffs made in Germany. The Select 3.0 (and all newer Pfaffs) are made in China. That's why they say "German Engineering" instead of "Made In Germany" on them.

What is a layer cake in quilting fabric?

How much fabric for a twin quilt backing?

Can you dryclean a homemade quilt?

Although some people have dry cleaned their quilts, it's NEVER advisable. Quilts are usually made with cotton -- and the dry cleaning process/chemicals are VERY damaging to the fabric!

This also goes for crazy quilts (made from cottons, velvets, silks, etc) ... they, too, can be irreparably damaged by the dry cleaning process/chemicals.

So what to do? If you don't think that regular laundering is appropriate, try laying the quilt outside on grass (not dirt, mud, etc) on a VERY sunny day ... the sun will freshen the fabrics and "bleach" any stains and the grass will, in effect, act as a deodorizer.

If it's just stinky, try putting the quilt in a garbage bag (and make sure to mark it -- many quilts have been tossed out by accident this way by unsuspecting family members!!) and toss in a quarter bar of Gold Dial bar soap. Leave the bag, closed, for a few days ... when you open it up, you'll find your quilt is wonderfully deodorized and smells lovely!

Hope this helps!! :)

What are the properties for quilting?

The question is difficult to answer, as "properties" is not a quilting term. However, quilting consists of three layers (top, batt, and back) secured together by stitching.

Why does your needle keep breaking when you free motion quilt on your Designer SE?

The most common cause of needle breaks while free-motion quilting is moving the fabric while the needle is still in the fabric. This is a very fine line, and only improves with practice. Usually directions will tell you to stitch at a very fast speed. However, I find that fast stitching doesn't give the machine time to make a good stitch. It might look good on the right side, but look at the underneath side and you'll usually see that the bobbin thread is laying on the fabric and is just looped around the top thread. If that's what you're seeing you can bet that the stitching will not be there very long.

My method of choice is to set the machine for free-motion stitching by only lowering the feed-teeth. I use the little metal foot that looks like a horseshoe, it requires removing the ankle and attaches with the screw. As you stitch, it should move up and down with the needle. When the needle goes down, the foot goes down to hold the fabric for the stitch to form. Generally, I'll use a titanium needle because they stay sharper longer. I also set the speed to the slowest or one click up. Keep your foot on the foot control, but you're not going to use it to stitch. When you're ready to begin stitching, touch the "start" button and let the machine go at it's own pace. It will start slow, but picks up speed after just a few stitches. When you want to stop, just tap the foot control and it will stop stitching. Be sure your needle is set to stop in the down position.

I have used this method for years -- I love whoever put the automatic stitching and speed controls on the Vikings! I've also taught many classes and the ladies were successful with the free-motion.

Practice, practice, practice!!

What is the topic A quilt of a country out of many one?

The question seems to refer to a quotation or title that should read: "A Quilt of A Country; Out of Many, One." The title refers to the original motto of the U.S.A., "E Pluribus Unum," which translates "Out of Many, One." That means that the many states of the U.S. form one nation. The expression also accurately describes a pieced quilt, which is one object constructed of many small parts (patches) joined together.

How do you use a quilt in beddings?

Quilts are used in the same way blankets and bedspreads are used on beds. They are laid over the top sheet, so that one sleeps between the sheets, rather than directly under a quilt. This protects the more fragile quilt from wear and tear. A fancy or "best" quilt also can be used as a decorative bedspread and removed from the bed when turning down the covers before sleeping.

What does step to the alter mean in quilting?

"Step to the Alter" is the name of a quilt pattern. The spelling is "altar," meaning the table at the front of a church. So a "Step to the Altar" quilt would be made as a wedding quilt for a new bride and groom.

In Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, there are 4 different blocks called "Steps to the Altar." They are all complex pieced blocks (constructed of geometric pieces of cloth stitched together) in which the pieces represent stair steps leading to the church altar where the wedding vows are said.

How are Amish quilts made?

The Amish are a group of individuals whom, for religious reasons, choose to rely on techniques and technologies that they can make, control and repair without reliance on an outside community. Because of this religious belief and lifestyle, most Amish communities do not have electricity or electrical machinery. Therefore, true Amish quilts are made by hand, with a thread needle and fabric. However, there are quite a few underhanded dealers who will sell "Amish" quilts that were not made by hand without the use of a machine.

If you heard someone say they have a notion to quilt that could mean that they are wanting to make quilts, or want to start quilting etc. A quilting notion is something used in the creation of making a quilt. How do you store quilts?

Answer

To keep your quilts clean and away from musty smells buy the plastic bags with a zipper or one with a small hole and cap on it and place your quilt inside, then use your vacuum cleaner and suck all the air out of it and seal it. It will be as fresh as a daisy when you take it back out. All you'll need to do is put it in the dryer to flush it up. I just sent a nice quilt to an American friend of mine in Wisconsin and I put it in a smaller box (less expensive) and put the quilt in a plastic bag with sealer, sucked the air out and sent it. My friend put it in the dryer and it puffed right up. This is also a great idea for storing wedding dresses. In Canada it can cost you $80 - $150 to have a dry cleaners do the same thing you are doing at home.

How can you get colored chalk markings out of a quilt?

There are a few things you can try:

-rub gently with a damp cloth

-fabric eraser

-Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

-put white vinegar on a cloth and rub gently, air dry then wash with cool water

*Be sure to test each of these on a scrap piece of fabric first.

Chalk is difficult to get out of fabric; I prefer water soluble markers.

What does fat eight mean in quilting?

The terms "fat eighth" and "fat quarter" are used to describe a piece of fabric that has been cut from the bolt from the selvage to the fold, and 1/8 or 1/4 yard long. Normally, fabric is 44" wide, from selvage to selvage, and a normal 1/8 yard would measure 4.5" X 44" and a 1/4 yard would measure 9" X 44". These dimensions don't allow you to make very big pieces. To solve this problem, the quilting stores will cut a fat eighth 22" (from the edge to the fold) X 9" long, and a fat quarter is 22" X 18". Since it is cut half as wide, and twice as long as a "normal" eighth or quarter, it has the same number of square inches, but is a much more usable shape.

What are quilt patterns?

How many yards of fabric to make a king size blanket?

I would use 3 1/2 yds x 120" width fabric. My mattress is 12" thick and I left 8"on both sides for the tuck(I like enough tuck underneath so the sheet won't come undone. So my measurements are Mattress 60 wide x 80 long. For the fitted sheet 60"+12 (width of the mattress) +12(WOM) +8(for tuck)+8(for tuck)=100"wide. For the length 80"+12"+12"+8"+8"=120"length. So cut length is 100"wide x 120"length..If you like you can adjust the tuck to less inches..
