What stitch length is correct for piecing a quilt?
I like sewing 12 to 14 stitches per inch.
The reason being, when you have to take out stitching ( and at some point you will ! ) they are not so close, that it becomes an impossibility.
Also, the stitches are close enough together, that when you are strip quilting, your work is not going to come apart when you cut your pieces.
The setting on most machines is 2 or 2.5.
Sew on a scrap piece and count how many stitches you sewed in 1 inch.
Adjust accordingly.
No more so than today . . .
The biggest difference, is in 'olden times' lighting was a problem, so evening quilt work was limited.
Many women today, still quilt using traditional hand piecing methods.

The finished block size of a quilt is the size of the block after it is stitched into the quilt. The block size has to include the seam allowances on all four sides. In other words, a 12 1/2 inch block will become a 12 inch finished block.

How do you cut bias strips for binding?
Bias strips are cut on a 45 degree slant from the grain of the fabric. One common strip width is 2 1/2 inches wide, which produces a 1/2 wide binding on the front and back of the quilt. Cut the fabric using a rotary cutter, rotary ruler and cutting mat. First, press to remove creases at the fold. To make the first cut across the fabric, place the fabric open on the cutting mat, take one corner and lay it along the opposite side to make a triangle and a new fold line and place the ruler on the fabric. Make the first cut along the new diagonal fold of fabric. Then move the ruler over 2 1/2 inches, aligning the ruler with the first cut, and make the second cut, which will give you two bias strips that are 2 1/2 inches wide and more than 40 inches long.

What does it mean to quilt an all over stipple?
Stippling is a technique used to fill in large background areas of a quilt. It is a meandering line of very curvy stitching, where the lines never cross each other. I suppose you could do it in hand quilting, but I've only seen it used in free-motion machine quilting. It takes practice to make the curves smooth and to not quilt yourself into a corner!
Do you need to clean a quilt that has been covered with a duvet cover all winter?
As long as there have been no big spills ( tea or coffee in bed etc.) I put mine out in the sun in the yard ( a balcony would do) for the afternoon, then shake it out and put it in the dryer on air fluff for about an hour. I worked in a dry cleaners and they used to say that although you CAN wash and dry a feather duvet yourself, it's very difficult to get the filler completely dry and it will mildew over time and become unusable. they have huge, very high heatf drum driers that really get it thoroughly dry, so if it needs cleaning, I'd go the dry cleaning route. good luck.
What does a quilting walking foot look like?
A walking foot, also known as a dual-feed or even-feed foot, is a necessity for quilting and sewing on some fabrics. If you've ever sewn on plaids or horizontal stripes, you know you can pin the seams together and match the patterns on the fabric perfectly, but when you get to the end of the seam the patterns don't match up. That's because the bottom layer of the fabric is taken under the needle by the feet teeth and the top layer is just along for the ride. The top layer also has the presser foot pushing down on it, holding it back even more. When you put the walking foot on, it has feed teeth on it that take the top layer of fabric under the needle at the same pace as the bottom layer.
So to answer your question: a walking foot is about 4 inches long. It attaches to the presser foot ankle with a screw and has a prong that goes on the needle screw to make the feed teeth that are built into the foot work in conjunction with the needle movement. As the needle comes up out of the fabric, the feed teeth in the foot grab onto the top layer of fabric and push it toward the back of your machine.
Hope this helps.

The quilt top is the uppermost layer of the quilt, overlying the batting (inside layer that gives the quilt most of its warm and depth) and the quilt backing. The quilt top is the layer that is made of pieces of different fabrics laid out to form a pattern or picture, and is often heavily decorated with special stitches.
There are some quilts, particularly wedding quilts, where the quilt top is a single piece of fabric and the decoration is made solely in the quilting stitches that bind the three layers together.
