In the case of Raggedy Ann, it was the doll by about three years. Illustrator and writer Johnny Gruelle rescued an old, dusty rag doll from the attic to give to his young daughter. Since it had no face, Gruelle painted one. They decided to name the doll Raggedy Ann, combining the names of two poems by James Whitcomb Riley, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphan Annie." On September 17, 1915, Gruelle received a patent on the rag doll and in 1918 the first in a series of Raggedy Ann books was published. Raggedy Andy came along two years later.

They were created originally as cartoon characters in juvenile books, similar to the animal cartoon Uncle Wiggily in that respect. The dolls were made by Knickerbocker Toy company and were very popular. Originally only Ann ( I think they spell it without the E, unlike my Mother"s usage) Andy was written into the series later... in due time there were movie cartoons about the odd-looking but lovable pair. Two hearts as one may have been a slogan in the film cartoon. The artist who cooked up the whole thing was one Johnny Gruelle. the cartoonist got into this act after a near nervous paralysis following witnessing an extremely violent bank robbery or suicide. In his case the plunge into fantasy worked out. Yes, they came out in the teens, around l9l5 ( in cartoon form and books)- later movie cartoons.

If the book is the 1918 edition then I have heard some people selling them for $300-$500. Personally I would put it on EBay and open a bid at about $350. This is a terrifying case of a raggedy Ann doll named Annabelle. The case is from the 1970's and is highlighted in the book The Demonologist. This is one of the Warrens most asked about cases. The referral came from an Episcopal priest. A somber toned clergyman told Ed Warren of two young nurses who had communicated with what they thought to be a human spirit. Raggedy Ann was first introduced as a doll in 1915. It wasn't until 1918 that she was introduced in the book "The Raggedy Ann Stories". Raggedy Andy was introduced in 1920, in a sequel book, titled "The Raggedy Andy Stories".

My Raggedy Ann is a very old doll, she lay in the attic for years. She lived in a trunk there for 50 long years with her legs doubled over her ears. And thats where I found her, my Raggedy Ann, my Grandmother played with her too. The best known one was Knickerbocker Toy company. They also made some Ripley"s believe it or not Freak dolls that got them in er, Hot Water. The Freak dolls were raided by the FDA of all people. It was thought they could give kids nightmares about being malformed- not so with Raggedy Ann.

Raggedy Ann and Andy were never, to my knowledge, used as Ventriloquist"s dummies or ( animated) dolls/puppets. It originated as a series of juvenile cartoon books. The creator, one Johnny Gruelle, was allegedly inspired by witnessing a violent crime or suicide- I seem to recall a magazine editor shot himself in the head-on the job. So, Johnny retreated into the most juvenile fantasy- do not know what he wrote before that... so it goes. In a rather remote vein, the somewhat dysfunctional- but manufactured Raggedy Ann dolls were a forerunner of (over-wide angle love) some might even call it Underdog chic-=not the Dog character) and thus a fore-runner of the Cabbage Patch kids created by one Xavier Roberts.

In the old days, young girls were taught to sew and read with a straight posture. And Raggedy Anne was a famous show on the old days. So I say yes! She did do that.( Or maybe)

Having the Raggedy Ann and the Bratz dolls show younger girls that looks aren't everything whereas the barbie had made an affect on a girls self-esteem

A lot of people find charm in those dolls. Remember the Hunchback of Notre Dame?
