Can red eared sliders eat raw shrimp?
Yes. If the fish is much larger than the turtle, it is possible the the turtle will leave it alone, but things like feeder goldfish will be eaten rather quickly. If you are looking to put fish in the tank as pets, do not, as they will most likely be eaten. If you are looking for fish to specifically feed to the turtle, ask your local pet store what fish to purchase to give them the best nutrients needed.

What is the lifespan of a red eared turtle?
We have a female red ear slider who is in her early 70's. She was sent to us from a woman in Oklahoma who was dying of a heart condition. The lady had called me and begged me to find a good home for her babies. She told us that she had these turtles since she was a young girl of 12 years. The lady had children but felt that they would not care properly for the turtles. She was 69 years old.I agree to take them.
An airline pilot brought the two turtles to my lobby. He had transported them in the cockpit of his plane. Quasimodo and Tudor Rose were their names.
I live in NYC. They stayed with me for 3 years until I could find a great home for them. The family that took the turtles lives in my neighborhood and have had Tudor Rose, who was renamed Chloe, for 18 years. Quasimodo died a few years ago.
Chloe has just come back to me for re-housing. The little boy who had her is now out of college and has a job where he is traveling a lot so he asked us to find her a new home with folks that are home most of the time.
Chloe had a new companion named Josh ( another female) who has been with her for 18 years.
Presently both turtles are living at the Wild Bird Fund, a wildlife rehab center in NYC. -

Will a big red eared sliders attack a small red eared slider?
Watch your red eared slider while they are feeding. Notice the way that their eyes focus on their food to the point where they are nearly cross-eyed? That is a signal when they are about to bite something. So when their eyes focus, that is when they are about to 'attack'.
What does a red-eared slider eat?
When young they are more carnivorous (meaning they eat eat meat) and will eat fish, snails, crayfish, insects, frogs and earthworms. For both adults and juveniles a varied diet is important.
You can feed them the commercial turtle food (from pet stores), but do supplement with the other things they like to eat to keep them healthy and interested in their food. Adults are more herbivorous but still need some "meat" (fish, worms, etc.) A good base for adult diet is 1/4 of diet pellet/dry turtle food, 1/4 carnivorous foods (fish, worms, etc.) and 1/2 the diet should be plant based. Good plant foods to feed are romaine, kale, chard, and dandelion greens (without herbicides or pesticides!). You can also feed some aquarium plants such as elodea and horn-wort. I also feed my turtle tomatoes, bananas, horn-wort, romaine lettuce, commercial pellets and give her cuttle bone (like for birds) on occasion to give her extra calcium. Don't feed a lot of spinach or carrots as it has something (oxalic acid) in it that makes it hard for them to absorb calcium, which is very important for turtles. Baby and young turtles can be fed every day but adults only need to be fed every other day or so. My turtle loves to catch and eat rose-red minnows. It is also good exercise for her.
They also love to eat earth worms !
Can red eared sliders eat apples and grapes?
Yes, RES turtles will eat both bread and apples. They also eat other fruits such as strawberries and melon. They should only be given these foods as treats as they need a staple turtle diet in order to remain healthy. They should be given a staple pellet such as Reptomin and supplemented with Turtle Bites, made of fruit and vegetable ingredients. They can also be given red leaf lettuce on a regular basis.
What is happening when a Red Eared Slider turtles shell gets soft?
If it won't eat and it's shell is soft, it isn't getting adequate heat and light. It requires UVA and UVB light to digest food. It must bask in the light and be completely out of water in order to dry its shell so it doesn't get soft. If you don't get it the proper heat and light soon, it will die. They can't survive for long without proper heating and lighting.
How long can red eared slider turtles live out of water?
Adult snapping turtles can stay under water for 40-50 minutes. I have a baby snapper and he stays under for about 10-15 minutes. I know he can hold his breath for longer but it is really just a choice thing. If a snapping turtle knows that a potential predator is near by then he may stay down for 20 minutes or more. If a baby snapper is comfortable with his environment then he may leave his head above water or come up every minute or so.

Can you put a frog in with your red eared slider and your yellow belly turtles?
First of all, a 10 gallon tank is too small for a turtle, let alone a turtle AND a frog! The proper rule of thumb for aquatic turtles is 10 gallons for every inch of turtle... if you have a 4 inch long turtle, you need at least 40 gallons of water. And second of all, putting a frog with a slider of any age will mean a fed turtle. The turtle WILL eat the frog. Don't try it.

When do red eared sliders become an adult?
Hatchlings are roughly 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length. After the first year, a hatchling, now referred to as a yearling, should be around 2-3.5" inches long. Male yearlings become sexually mature around 4 inches in length, females about 5 inches. The average length of an adult RES can vary between 7 to 12 inches. Adult males range between 7-9 inches (17.8 cm - 22.8 cm) while adult females fall between 10-12 inches (25 cm - 30.5 cm).Note: Size cannot reliably indicate age; however, captive turtles usually grow at a much faster rate. This is usually a result of overfeeding and a lack of hibernation periods. Overfeeding causes dangerous health (physical and intestinal) issues and captive RES do not need hibernation.

How do you raise a baby red-eared slider if you can't find the mom or dad turtle?
I do not believe that turtles nurture their young past the egg stage (building an appropriate nest). Young turtles are left to fend for themselves as soon as they hatch. The above answer is correct... so the answer to how you raise one is simple. You don't. Leave it alone. In many areas turtles are protected, and cannot legally be taken from the wild and raised as pets. If you found it on the road, or some place that isn't safe - bring it into the bush or near a local watering hole. If the carapace is broken, take it to a wildlife vet and they can take care of releasing it after providing care. go to your local pet store, get reptomin baby turtle food, and all the accessories needed to ensure they have proper heat and filtration. once they become the size of a 50-cent peice, continue to feed them reptomin baby, but also start feeding them dried krill (you can find this in the walmart fish aisle - of course, you will have to break it into smaller peices with your fingers), and even try feeding them very young baby fish and guppies. with the proper water depth (recommended only being as deep as the width of their shell plus legs fully stretched out), proper uva/uvb light, proper temperature, and proper filtration (to ensure they do not get skin bacteria disease), your baby turtle should be good to go! i would also recommend getting that turtle shell lotion they have to help shells grow strong to prevent softshell disease.
