No, Rudolph was developed by a catalogue copyrighter for Montgomery Wards in an effort to add a thematic character to keep the kids turning the pages to the toy section ( Sears did much the same with Dennis the Menace). The popular song was written in I believe l943 by one Johnny Marks- and the rest is history. Rudolph does NOT figure in the poem ( The Night before Christmas) where there are eight tiny reindeer and it is implied Santa has size-control and shape-shifting powers to get down the chimney- this miniaturization aspect is ignored by most modern Claus-pushers as it is TOO FAR OUT.
