The Medieval Period, also known as the Middle Ages, was first. It is the period in European history running from the end of the classical period (marked by the overthrow of the last Western Roman emperor in 476 C.E.) to the beginning of the Renaissance. The Medieval Period is sometimes said to have run from 500 C.E. to 1500 C.E., just to use round numbers, but the Renaissance actually began in Florence in the late 1300s or early 1400s. By 1500, the Renaissance had spread through most of Europe.

The Renaissance (meaning "rebirth") was a time of great intellectual change in Europe. Literature in both Latin and everyday languages flowered. Art became more realistic. Science was reborn, with thinkers basing their knowledge on observation and experimentation rather than theoretical reasoning. The Age of Discovery, during which Western Europeans voyaged to distant continents, paralleled the Renaissance in time. Together they led to the beginning of what historians refer to as "modern history".

The colonialist Europeans took or stole millions and millions worth of gold and silver from the new world, mainly Mexico and South America. This huge amount of wealth robbed from the colonies impoverished Mexico and South America for five centuries. It brought the level of Europe up out the ignorance of the middle ages. It did raise their lives up like a winning lottery ticket. These white Europeans, who were ultra colonialists, prejudiced toward native peoples of America, lifted themselves on the backs of brown and black people.

Artists and writers created extraordinary art and literature that combined new and traditional subjects with classical styles and new ideas.

The Renaissance was embodied with ideas of greatness, individual achievement, and the desire to seek understanding and knowledge for the sake of knowledge. The Renaissance was also possible by well funded patrons that could afford to make their artistic and intellectual "renaissance" ideas come to fruition.

The Age of Exploration was a desire for several things: 1. A desire for wealth. This is a continuation of a concept that was flourishing during the renaissance.

2. A desire for understanding. People sought out exploration for glory, the simple joy of being able to say I was the first one to discover something! This strive for knowledge and understanding is directly aligned to what was considered important during the Renaissance.

3. Spreading Religion. Although not directly related to the ideologies surrounding the Renaissance, it would have been made possible through Renaissance technology, the Printing Press.

And finally, technology that aspired creation during the Renaissance is what made these trans-atlantic journeys possible.

The new ideas and knowledge that came out of the Renaissance changed the way people looked at both art and artists. Medieval painting had presented life through symbolism while the Renaissance preferred realism. Renaissance artists developed portraiture and humanized their subjects.

This new style of art was viewed as contributing to the overall attempt by intellectuals to improve the world through novel approaches to thought, and a revival of ideas from ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Because of this, artists were regarded very highly.

There were many things that changed during the Renaissance. Such as the art, literature, and even religion which would have never be allowed in medieval times. The Renaissance was a whole change of mind. :)

The communist Russian Government used propaganda paintings showing workers in dramatic poses to install their view on the population. As did the Nazis in their pursuit of what they considered the Aryan Ideal. Both are historical examples of the subject used in propaganda paintings. A large painting of a dictator's face put on public view is another example.
