Hi there I sometimes feel people get narcissism mixed up with perfectionism. The two are closely related in many ways. Narcissistic people are extremely hard to cope with either in families, as friends or partners. Two things could have happened with you. You could have simply been incompatible. People such as this often think they are extremely brilliant and others are just plain stupid. Don't buy it! It is only the narcissistic's opinion (not really meaning much in todays society.) Secondly, narcissistic people are hopping here and there (high energy) and their minds race always. Generally they are quite bright, but have misplaced concepts as to how they should treat other people. They seldom get along with groups of people (including their own family gatherings) and keep people at arms lengths. I would say, consider yourself lucky this person left.
