This sensation is caused by zero/negative g-force which occurs when you accelerate downwards at a rate faster than natural freefall, so in this case you are being pulled downwards from the top of the hill faster than than a natural freefall.

It is not based on your weight to be able to ride a roller coaster, it is based on your height, and each ride requires you to be a certain height.

Nemesis is a Rollercoaster in Alton Towers which is located in the Forbidden Valley. This intense ride takes you over rivers of blood and rock, reaching G-forces greater than a space shuttle launch. It was first opened on the 19th March 1994 and cost £10,000,000.

The typical roller coaster starts out with a cog rail that boosts the cars to a height. Here, electrical energy is added to the system, and converted to gravitational potential energy. At the top, the coaster basically stops before starting the plunge. As the cars plunge, the potential energy is converted to the energy of motion (kinetic energy). If there are subsequent ups and downs, kinetic energy is partially traded back to potential energy and vice versa. At the end, a brake slows the cars down right at the finish, converting the kinetic energy to heat. During the ride, some friction also converts some energy to heat irreversibly.

Height of the tallest hill, I guess is the answer. There could be some other factors in the shape of the course like twists or spirals which would have some angular effect on the speed, as well.

Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH has 17 roller coasters. Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles, CA has 16 and will debut its 17th roller coaster in the summer of 2010. Cedar Point is working on its 18th coaster, but it won't come out before the new one at Six Flags Magic Mountain. That means the record will be shared for a while, but Cedar Point will take it away soon.

Both Medusa in Great Adventure (now called Bizarro) and in Discovery Kingdom have 7 loops. The is a Medusa in Six Flags Mexico that is wood and has no loops.

provides a force downwards on slopes. this causes acceleration in the downwards direction, and decelleration in the upwards direction, which is then translated into lateral motion as the track curves. As friction slows the cart, conservation of energy E=mgh prevents the cart from reaching its original height without additional boosters/chains. To simplify: gravity provides the accelerateing force to cause the cart to coast.

The steepest drop on a roller coaster can be found on Mumbo Jumbo at Flamingoland park in (Malton, Yorkshire, England). It's drop is 112 degrees.

A close second place goes to Steel Hawg at Indiana Beach (Monticello, Indiana) at 111 degrees. Both coasters listed above are nearly identical in layout and style.

There are also other rides that "cheat" their way into the records, but can be classified as drops.

The Afterburner coaster at Wonder Island has a 150-degree drop followed by a 160-degree drop, but both are lined with brakes to guide the car down the drop with a rather slowed speed, thus not truly dropping.

Another ride worth noting is the "Screamin' Squirrel" ride model by S&S Power (all these record-breakers are S&S rides). The Screamin' Squirrel technically speaking has a 180-degree drop, but some could argue it not to be a drop.

Gravit & speed. Coasters usually start with a long climb up a steep incline. This gives the 'cars' potential energy. Once they go over the top (or brow) of the incline, gravity takes over, increasing the cars speed.

Friction, slows the roller coaster down to a slow enough pace that it eventually stops.

Kingda Ka and it's 456 feet high and it's in Six Flags Great Adventure.
