Sorry to debunk this urban myth, and the other one (at least closer in date), that it marked the passing of Henry Royce in 1933; The answer (and I have this from the Rolls-Royce Heritage Centre - my sons were doing a school project) is that the logo changed in 1932 to the more neutral black colour, to avoid clashing with the latest car bodywork colour schemes
