Yes. If the nerve inside of a tooth dies, it is prone to infection (if not infected already). Root canal treatment should prevent or resolve this infection. A tooth may die for various reasons such as: decay, trauma, extensive wear/grinding/abrasion.

Pain depends on the severity of the infection, the depth of the root canal, the "skill" of the dentist, and your pain threshold. There's lots of factors in a root canal which can increase/decrease pain.

I've personally had three root canals. At some points during, it is not comfortable at all. I've never felt pain during any of my root canals, probably because of the anasthetic which is used. In my last root canal I had a small ache afterwards for two days, which I'd pitch at around 2 out of 10.

No. That would just be a waste of time and money. In many cases, you wouldn't even get a root canal on a permanent tooth. You would most likely have it pulled depending on what tooth it is. Just have the baby-tooth pulled since it is going to be pulled someday, regardless.

A dentist, specifically yours, would probably suggest removal of the tooth - especially if the abscess has come back.

I'd say about three days. With this type of drug, it only takes a full week before your body starts to develop a "need" for it. After a few days, I'd suggest something along the lines of fiorecet.

If you have swollen gums and pain anywhere near the swelling, it is a good idea to go see your dentist immediately. This could be your first sign of either gum infection or abscessed tooth, or bad root. Take no chances and go see a dentist to be on the safe side. Hopefully your dentist will tell you something simple, like you probably just bit down on something hard and your gum will be sensitive for a while. but it's better to find out it is something simple rather than waiting until you get more signs.

you only need to brush your teeth for 1.5 to 2 minutes, but it wont do you any harm to brush them for longer

Yes! In fact, half of the time, its the root canal which clears away the infection as your dentist would usually file away the "bad" part of the tooth anyway.

The bump is an abscess, the inside of your tooth is rotting and full of bacteria. These bacteria come out of the root of the tooth where the blood supply and nerves went into the pulp of the tooth when it was healthy. When they reach the jawbone the body can detect them (it can't so well when they are in the tooth) and begins to fight them causing pain and swelling and the bump is full of puss.

The root canal work cleans out the inside of the tooth and drains the puss through the hole in the tooth root.
