How long will it take a sailboat to sail from Annapolis to Norfolk?

With all things working for you like the tide, weather and crew you can make it in one 24 hour run. But if you just did it during the day its going to take you 3 days.

Does it matter where a boat's name is placed?

Normally, a boat's name is placed at the stern of the boat. I have never seen it placed anywhere else on the boat. I supposed you could put it up by the bow, if you wanted to, but people would be less likely to see the name there. It's your choice, really. I do know that the sailing registration number, if you choose for it to be on the outside of your boat, must be in the bow.

How long to sail around the world?

This is a good one and a very popular question. We don't know. Some cruisers spend over 10 years getting around the world, some quit after 2 months. On average a circumnavigation takes 3-4 years.

What is very small single handed sailing boat that you sit in called?

A sailing dinghy is a very small, usually single handed, sailing boat that you can sit in. Additional info: A dinghy is a type of small boat, often carried or towed by a larger vessel. The term can also refer to small racing yachts or recreational open sailing boats. Utility dinghies are usually rowboats or have an outboard motor, but some are rigged for sailing. Because the smaller sailing dinghy responds more quickly to maneuvers, it is more suitable for beginner training in sailing than full-sized sloops.

What is a 'Square Knot Splice'?

The 'square knot splice' appears to be a square knot when finished, but actually joins two lengths of rope together. This knot is NOT recommended for heavy lifting or hauling, as is may slip if not secured with subsequent knots above and below.

How old do you have to be to sail?

Here in the USA, I obtained a Red Cross sailing qualification certificate at age 14. There were 12 year-olds in the class as well who passed. This class educated a person in safety, survival swimming, navigation, rules of the road, crewing and skippering a small boat, and some flag recognition. Check with your local Red Cross office for more information.

In which direction should the vessel's green sidelight be shining?

What is better catamaran or trimaran?

Tri's have a tendency to give you more open deck for the weight. The Cabin Space to Weight ratio is a little worse than cats or mono-hulls in that more structural material is required to maintain three hulls instead of two (or one). Lateral resistance is greater, as is drag, so they're harder to tack, but need less of (or no) keel. Some complex pyhsics come into pay when you calculate hull speed, so I can't answer that one here. Tri's are a more stable but less forgiving platform. If they turtle, they're stable in that position too, and thus very hard to right. Overall, and for these reasons, I personally would go with the cat, and I think most (but surely not all) people would too.

What is a pontoon?

A Pontoon is a floating platform usually provided at a tidal berth for ships. Also Marinas usually have pontoons for boats to moor at.

Why do big sails go faster than smaller sails?

What are the swimming skills needed for taking sailing lessons?

None - I have taught many people to sail over the years who can't swim. If you always wear a bouyancy aid or life jacket you'll be fine. If you do fall in the water, just remember 1) Stay with the boat and 2) the life jacket/bouyancy aid WILL keep you afloat so don't panic!

What is the ideal weather for sail boating?

Depends on the boat and whatever you are looking for. I like 10 to 15 knot range in my 30 footer. It is 6500 lbs and have no problem reaching hull speed with these winds. By reefing you can extend your comfort for higher winds.(less heeling which tends to require more force to control tiller or wheel.)

Sail boats and kites use what kind of energy?

Wind motion is the type of energy used by kites and sailboats.

What size outboard motor for a 25 ft sailboat?

That depends on what type of usage you have in mind: For example, if you just want something to get you around the marina, 1.5 - 3.0 hp would be fine. If you want power on the open ocean when the winds are gone, you'll want something that is large enough to make headway without rattling the spine to pieces.

A red cone shaped buoy, called a nun buoy, usually marks the right side of the channel when you are returning from the sea or going upstream. Remember it by saying, red, right, returning.
