What is the overhand knot used for on a ship?

While not as effective as the figure-eight knot in this application, the overhand knot is used as a 'stop-knot' at the free end of a line, to prevent its' slippage through the eyes of pulleys, and to give the sailor 'one last chance' to catch the line before it pays out.

What are j24 sailboats?

Fractional rigged 24' class boat circa 1980s, tweaked more for PHRF than IOR, the J24 saw a LOT of class racing too. The J24 leans towards racing more than cruising, which is to say it's fast and comfortable, but it's not what I'd want in the North Atlantic with a 2-man crew for a month or two.

It's dimensions are designed to allow it to compete favorably in IOR, with a surprisingly low handicap.

The J24 outperformed its bigger brother, the J30 in both sales and race performance. NOT a ULDB, the J24 is trailerable, not too pricey and is a good learning boat.

How is boat speed measured?

What colors appear on mooring bouys?

Is sailing the hardest sport in the world?

. . . matter of opinion. I vote for gymnastics - requires near total lifelong dedication and peak physical conditioning to even attempt some of the moves.

-------------

I agree -gymnastics ages the body faster than any other sport.

------------

In my opinion I would say that swimming is right up there with gymnastics. Like gymnastics, it is one of the few sports that actually require you to use all of your muscles not just a certain group of muscles. it may not be high impact but training for swimming includes running, weights, biking, and everything else you can think of.

What is jibing?

I think you may mean Gybing, as opposed to Jibing.

Gybing is when the back of a boat passes through the wind, and changes the angle at which the wind comes onto a boat. Gybes are very quick, and the boom will swing across very fast, which can sometimes cause injury if you are not prepared. When sailing with the wind behind you, you should be very careful not to gybe accidently. Gybes can be initiated by bearing away hard until the back of the boat has gone through the wind.

What does one prolonged blast mean?

One prolonged blast means a sound signal of between 4 and 6 seconds. By itself it to notify other users of the presence of a vessel that is manoeuvring.

Leaving a dock or if obscured by something for instance.

There are several sound signals for a vessel underway in restricted visbility.

  • A power drivel vessel underway, making way- 1 PROLONGED Blast (4-6 seconds duration) Not to exceed every two minutes.
  • A power driven vessel underway NOT making way-2 PROLONGED every 2 minutes, not exceed two minutes.
  • A vessel not under command, a vessel restricted in maneuverability, a vessel towing, a vessel engaged in fishing, a sailing vessel & a vessel constrained by her draft (International only) 1 PROLONGED blast followed by two short blast (duration about 1 second per short blast) every two minutes, not to exceed two minutes.
  • A MANNED vessel being towed shall sound 1 PROLONGED followed by 3 SHORT blasts every two minute, not to exceed two minutes.

for power driven vessels over 12meters it's one long blast every 2 minutes

What is the history of scurvy in sailing?

Scurvy is caused due to a lack of vitamin C. This was a problem for navies and ships which were out of touch with land for many months, and therefore had no access to fresh fruit or vegetables, a major source of vitamin C. The Royal Navy introduces limes to the diet of British sailors as a food supplement.

Usually A single masted sailboat is a sloop, but there are different types of sloops, such as one with two sails up front and it is called a cutter. It is still a sloop though, just a version of a sloop. In modern boats two masts would be either a ketch, yawl or schooner, but that's a whole other discussion.
