the ac compressor is on top near the front on the passenger side
there is a plug on the top and 2 tubes off the back
the top tube is the high pressure end and is thin
the other is the low pressure it is larger and below the other one
DONT touch the high pressure valve
only the low pressure
hook up your can of r134a to the valve, unscrew the protective cap on the ac compressor connect the valve stem
then turn the valve to Peirce the top of the can and back of the screw one to two tuns
hold the can upside down agitating it while the engine is running
it will take 5-15 minutes to empty the can

I am pretty sure the engines didn't change from 94 to 96 so, you will need to pull the front passenger tire. Remove the fender well cover- you need to pull the stupid little plastic retainer clips that GM likes so much all the way around the fender well. Needle nose pliers and a flat head screwdriver work very well or you can just rip them out and get replacements as they only cost like 3 cents apiece. Once the fender well is out you will see a series of pulleys with the accessory belt run around them the tensioner pulley will be very smooth and will use a 9/16 open end wrench to loosen, the nut head will be dead center on the pulley facing you. I believe you pull down on the pulley with the wrench to loosen but not sure. It will only move in two directions.
Will a 1999 Saturn sL1 engine work in a 1998 sL1?
My son's 1999 Salvaged/total Saturn SL1 was rebuilt using many engine and body parts from 1995-1999 Saturn SL1 and SL2 cars, I believe it will work fine. I do not recommend before 1995 or 2000 or later models. I do not recommend SL2 either.
I am not the expert but most of my son's engine is not 1999 SL1.
