Where might one go online to purchase a Singer Sewing Machine?

There are number of ways to buy a serger:

  • You can buy sergers at a number of retail outlets - most hobby and sewing stores (Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, Hancock Fabrics, etc.) have the inexpensive models for sale.
  • Sewing machine/vacuum boutiques are great places, because they have excellent customer service and a "mom and pop" store feel.
  • You can also go to your desired serger brand's website, and see where in your area there is a dealer. The best serger brand is Brother, but you can also check Janome and Viking.
  • You can also check for used models on ebay or Craigslist as well. Some people use their sergers for a month and get tired of of sewing.

What are the negatives of the sewing machine?

Drawbacks?? Hmmmm...... most people would say that the biggest drawbacks would be the lack of different patterns (zig-zag, scalloped, etc...) and the time used to thread the machine. The new machines offer a plethora of varied stitching patterns, and most are almost "self-threading". HOWEVER, the new machines are built from plastic and nylon. This allows the gears to slip and pop, but not break. So, the machine will look "normal" when viewed, but not be working properly, because the gears are not aligned correctly! The first machines were made by craftsmen, and designed, literally, to last for a hundred years! More and more, people are buying the old machines to USE, not to collect, because the gears, motor, etc. were heavy-duty, and virtually indestructible, and did not require the constant up-keep of some of the new machines! I use a Kenmore model 117.141, built around 1930, that runs as good as when it was new.

What is a thread serger?

A serger must be thread in a specific order every time. Lower Looper first, followed by Upper Looper, Left Needle and lastly Right Needle.

If your thread should break during operation, rethreading MUST BE done sequentially, and yes, this means you must unthread it to rethread it.

The thread path you follow for each looper and needle is usually shown on the inside door of your serger. If not, it's in the owner's manual.

When changing threads, many people tie on the new thread to the old to avoid unthreading and rethreading.

How do you sew a buttonhole with Brother VX-1010 sewing machine?

If you have the manual, refer to pages 28-31.

Making a buttonhole

NOTE:

1. It is recommended to practice making a buttonhole on a scrap piece of fabric before attempting it on your project.

2. Using tailor's chalk to mark the position and length of the buttonhole on the material is also recommended.

Step A: Bar Tack

1. Set the stitch length between 0 and 1 (F), stitch width to 5 and the needle position to R.

2. Lower the presser foot over the top right corner of the buttonhole mark and sew 3-6 stitches.

3. Stop the machine when the needle is in the material on the right side of the stitch. (Turn the balance wheel counterclockwise if necessary.)

Step B: Right Row

1. Set the stitch width to 2.

2. Sew the predetermined length of the buttonhole to the other end.

3. Stop the machine when the needle is in the material on the right side of the stitch. (Turn the balance wheel counterclockwise if necessary.)

Step C: Final Bar Tack

1. Set the stitch width to 5.

2. Sew 3-6 stitches.

4. Stop the machine when the needle is in the material on the left side of the stitch. (Turn the balance wheel counterclockwise if necessary.)

Step D: Left Row

1. Lift the presser foot.

2. Turn the material 180 degrees using the needle as an axis and set the stitch width to 0. Lower the presser foot.

3. Turn the balance wheel toward you (counterclockwise) to sew one stitch. This moves the needle from the left to the right.

4. Set the stitch width to 2.

5. Sew until the needle reaches the other bar tack. Stop the machine with the needle in the material on the right of the stitches.

Securing the stitching and cutting the buttonhole

1. To secure the stitching, turn the material 90 degrees counterclockwise, set the stitch width to 0, stitch length to 1, and sew 5-6 Straight Stitches.

2. Remove the material from the machine.

3. It is recommended that pins be placed across both bartack ends of the buttonhole as protection against cutting the stitches.

4. Cut an opening in the middle of the buttonhole with a seam ripper tool. Be careful not to cut through any stitches.

What is the use of a ballpoint needle?

It is a sewing machine needle that has a small ball at the tip, rather than the usual sharp point and is for used for stitching knitted or elasticated fabrics. As the ball enters the fabric, it pushes the fabric threads to one side rather than splitting them as a standard needle would and so is more "gentle". The holes that ball point needles leave in the fabric are larger than they would be with a standard needle, but because of the nature of knitted and elasticated fabrics, the holes become reasonably well hidden.

How calculate fabric yardage in a bed sheet?

The amount of fabric that you need depends on the project. Your pattern should specify yardage right on the back of it, where it lists supplies. However, if the measurements are not in yards, check out the link included with this answer. Scroll down to length converter and enter the amount of whatever fabric you need in the quantity box. From there, click on the measurement you are starting with in the "From" column and click on yards in the "To" column. After clicking "Go", the site will bring you back to the top, where it will say Result:, followed by the conversions. Hope this helps! Let me know if you'd like more information!
