The tissue will become sodden and sink, leaving the needle floating on the surface tension. Put the smallest drop of washing-up liquid on the water. Can't tell you exactly but can help you bracket it. I have a Domestic Rotary Electric sewing machine Model 151. Serial No. 153-34778. It was purchased in July 1949. The answer is - there IS no standard! Duvets can come in quite a range of sizes so the duvet cover needs to fit the size of your particular duvet. The first step would be to measure your duvet itself. Some queen sized duvets are actually called full/queen or double/queen which means they are meant to fit both a double bed and a queen sized bed. In my experience, any duvet so labeled is usually a bit smaller than one labeled just queen.

I clicked around to find some examples of the measurements of duvets and duvet covers. I looked at sites with directions for how to sew your own cover and at sites which showed ready made duvet covers from well-known stores and here are some examples I came across. You will see that there is a very large variation in sizes quoted so for certain it's buyer beware. Also bear in mind if you are purchasing a cover, that you may have to account for shrinkage so the size may be inflated to accommodate that.
