Richards was a brand sold by Sears around 1900, and was playing on the name of an unrelated very high quality English gun, the Westley Richards (no relation) Laminated steel was the term used for a form of twist steel barrel. These should NOT be fired with any modern smokeless ammo- and should be inspected by a gunsmith before shooting anything. But it would look great over the fireplace.

Savage stopped making the Sears single shot shotgun gun in 1963. The way Sears serial numbered there other products... If it's the same way that Savage serial numbered there guns you can tell the year by reading the 4th and 5th characters. Example would be serial number A865939. The year of this rifle would be 1959.

I have a Remington model 31 in 16ga and i shoot regular low brass shells in it and it does fine, it would depend on the type of game you are hunting. High brass shells are for more power and longer range.
