Yes, although you will want to ensure that you clean the chamber thoroughly after shooting the gun. The shorter shell length of a 2-3/4" shell will allow powder residue to build up ahead of the forcing cone. If this area is not cleaned well, a 3" shell will not be able to properly unfold and higher chamber pressures will result.

First you must determine who actually manufactured the firearm and its appropriate model number since Sears contracted with several different companies over the years and few gun value sources will list Sears marked guns. Winchester and Hi Standard were the two main suppliers although they weren't the only ones. Once you know what it is, a recent copy of the book Modern Gun Values can provide a good estimate (read the sections about rating the gun's condition and examine the gun dispassionately) or take it to a local gun smith and pay him to do the research and provide an estimate of the value.

I will offer that a gun sold by Sears carries a lower value than the same model with the actual manufacturer markings and without the Sears markings. Sears generally paid low ball prices for bulk purchases and sold the cheapest models so a Sears marked Winchester 30-30 (for example) will generally be less attactive than a Winchester Model 94.

If you are trying to place an insurance value of your grand dad's old gun, I can almost 100% assure you that it has more sentimental value than collector value and the collector value won't exceed about $150.

Your model 1897 was made in 1898, according to the serial number records that remain. The value can range from $75 for a common 12 gauge field model in poor condition to $3000 for an excellent condition black diamond trap model. The most common were field grade guns in 12 ga., typically they came with a 30" barrel, full choked. The "bluing" finish on the metal is usually worn off the early ones or, if they were stored for long periods of time, it has turned to a brown 'patina'. With the original stock and forestock free of cracks, these are worth approximately $400 in good condition. Add $100 for 16 ga. Add $200 if in like new condition. Riot/police models are worth an extra $200 (look for 20" barrel and metal buttplate). Military "trench" models are worth an extra $400 - 800. Solid frame versions (as opposed to the later take-down design) are worth an extra $100. Beware of fake riot, trench, and trap models.

The Crescent guns were offered in 12, 16, 20, and 28 gauges with Damascus twist laminated or Armory steel barrels depending on the shooter's wants. In 1898 it was said that these were the best American hammer guns in the market for the money.

Huge quantities of these "Hardware Guns" were produced in a profusion of private brands as well as in the Folsom house brand "American Gun Co. of NY". Crescent sold the guns until they were bought by J. Stevens Arms Co., Division of Savage Arms Corp in about 1930.

The Kingsland 10 Star was manufactured for Geller, Ward & Hasner of St. Louis, Mo.

Steel barrel shotguns should be checked by a gunsmith prior to use. Damascus barrel shotguns should be permanently retired.

tradewinds was a company out of tacoma WA. It went out of business in 1989. I own a tradewinds model h-170 12ga auto w/vent rib 28" barrell.

Alot of the guns were imported from Italy , Spain and the parts are hard to find, but I have had some sucess on www.e-gunparts.com. Click on the shotgun forum and ask questions about your particular gun(make and model) and you should get some answers there.

You need to get a letter from Browning. Date would be 1903-1910 or so.

Pioneer Arms double barrel shotguns were made by Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich, Conn, sometime between 1892 and about 1940. Crescent made thousands of these shotguns with many different brand names for individual hardware stores to sell. Pioneer Arms were made for the Kruse and Baklmann Hardware Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio.

If there are foreigh proof marks on the gun then it was probably made in Russia.

The CC440 does appear to be the Marlin/Glenfield 70 as stated earlier.

I have a pioneer model 26 bolt action 22 long rifle from Gamble Stores incorporated. It was my father's and he bought it new when he was 12 years old. It was from a store that sold pretty much everything you could buy in those days - the closest thing to a Walmart. He is now 87 years old - so that makes the rifle 65 years old. It still works well. I'm going to spend some time reconditioning it (it has some pitting from all the years, but the blueing has held up surprisingly well under a light dusty coat of rust. I'm in central California and it stays pretty dry here. Sorry, that's all the info I know or could find.

Exel Arms of America imported Spanish shotguns until 1967. All of the Lanber Armas O/U guns were 12 gauge 2-3/4" or 3". The Laurona O/U snd S/S came in 12, 16, & 20. There should be markings on the side of the barrel somewhere. If in doubt, take it to a reputable gunsmith.

I have one it was pat. in 1901 it was my dads. Money could not buy it but I was very supprised to find out that it was worth only 35.00 the were mass produced and sold by a hardware store in kentucky.

I paid $300 for my 4" stainless about a year ago. It is about 90% with original box and manual. I'm in St. George, Utah. Great handgun !
