Nobody knows what the cause of SIDS is, there are a few ways you can prevent it. One way is to have your baby sleep on their side. Most people want their baby to sleep on their backs, but this is not good because if the baby spits up in it's sleep he/she can choke on the spit-up. There are other ways to prevent it, but you will have to do some internet searching to find out.

No, small babies should be put to sleep on their backs it makes them much less susceptible to cot-death. Once they can turn themselves they will find their own comfortable position, just as an older person does.
