How does ski wax affect the speed of skis?
i think that waxing them provides a support on the snow and then creates i guess a ballast upon the snow
It does not create a ballast on the snow. A ballast is a tank of something, commonly water or sand, or it is left empty, to alter the buoyancy of a submarine, hot air balloon, dirigible, ship etc in a fluid. Snow is not a fluid. All it does is smooth the bases of the skis and make them slipperier. It makes you go a lot faster. That's it.
What percenatge of the us population ski or snowboard?
That depends on which country you look at.
In Sweden the lift organisation have statistics saying that 28% of the population buy a lift pass for at least one day (most go a week) every year. To this you have have to add all the cross-country skiers which probably are just as many or more but of course many of them are in the lift pass buying group.
I assume these number are pretty representative for countries with skiing traditions i.e. Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Switzerland etc.
Salomon ski boot heel repair kit?
About two years ago, I finally got their customer service number from one of their reps. I called and got the run-around. Finally, I convinced them to send a set of replacement toe and heel pieces to the ski shop where I was working at the time. When they finally arrived (about 6 weeks later), they were the wrong toe and heel pieces. They were for a different boot. I was irritated, and I called back. They sent another set. Once again, they were for a different boot. I gave up and skied with my worn-down toe and heel pieces for the rest of the season. Skied 85 days.
Called again last year. Same run-around. They refused to send them to my home address and said they would only send them to an authorized Salomon dealer. I begrudgingly agreed and requested that they be sent to the shop where I was working, again. Of course, they sent the wrong set...AGAIN. Spent the whole season on the same worn-down boots from the year before. Skied 92 days.
I'm trying to gear up for this season. I've lost the phone number that I had such a difficult time tracking down. I'm sure that I'd run into the same problems if I called them again. I love my boots, but I imagine that I'm going to have to pony up for a new pair this season because I can't possibly ski on these worn-down toe and heel pieces anymore. I know I won't be able to track the customer service line down.
Unless this is somehow resolved very easily (i.e., if some Solomon rep reads this and helps me out), I will never buy Solomon again and I will launch a full-blown attack on the brand. I will strongly advise anyone against buying their boots on account of Solomon's pathetic customer service. What's the purpose of buying boots with replacement toe and heel pieces if you can NEVER get a replacement set?
What is the difference between a bunny slope and a black diamond slope at a mountain?
Well, this really all depends on your level of experience. When beginning, the runs marked with a green circle are the way to go, followed by the blue squares once you are feeling comfortable. The black diamonds are for expert skiiers/snowboarders, and are usually very steep, with hazards such as large poles (from chairlifts, etc.), trees, and so on in that nature. So, I recommend using much caution and thought when deciding if the black diamond is for you. If you do choose it however, I strongly recommend following a friend/teacher/mentor who has gone down the run (or just knows what to expect). It's fun to ski with a friend, and they will be setting an appropriate pace. :)

How long downhill skis must be?
This is another question best answered by a salesperson in one of your local ski shops. This is a question that isdefinitely not a question someone can answer on wikianswers, because skis that are 150cm may be way to long for one person and skis that are 175cm may be way to short for another person. The size of the skis you should buy depends on a lot of things, such as: height, weight, skier ability, and style, power or finesse. For me, skis that are 161 are about right. I am 160lbs, 5'6" (I'm A LOT heavier than I look) I ski aggressively, my style is more towards power, I'm type 3 skier and ski all mountain (I put in the correct info onto a ski calculator and got the length). For comparison I put the same height and weight into the calculator but said the style was more finesse, skier type 1, doesn't ski aggressively, and sticks to groomers and the length this time was 155cm, just goes to show that height and weight are not the only things that matter. This is a fairly good ski length calculator so I will give you the website address, http:/www.frostyrider.com/tips/size-guide-skis.htm (copy and paste into the address bar of your computer). This is a good site but nothing beats the advice of a skier who is trained in helping people find the correct size skis. My best advice would be to go to your local ski shop and ask them, they will be able to answer.

How should you take care of your downhill skis?
Downhill ski poles...oh how they are often misused in skiing. The purpose of your ski poles is to help provide balance. However, you don't lean on the them or rely on them too much. Ski balance should originate from your core abdominal muscles, buttocks, and legs. How you place your shoulders while skiing makes a difference as well. You want to keep your shoulders square to the hill or in other words, facing the bottom of the hill. You plant your ski pole as you are initiating a turn. You plant one ski pole at a time. For example, you plant your left ski pole as you are turning to the left. And vice versa - you plant your right ski pole as you are turning to the right. Do not lift your ski pole high in the air. This is a waste of time and energy. Instead quickly and smoothly plant it into the ground and remove it at the completion of your turn.

There's no accurate way to know how many people ski/snowboard in the world since there is no way to know who does and who doesn't, for instance, just because someone owns skis doesn't mean they ski, the only way that you could find out is an extremely large scale study and even than many people would not reply to it.

How many skiing accidents has happened in Canada?
Ski accidents are quite common. The only bone not broken so far in any ski accident is located in the inner ear.
The more turns you make the slower you go. So I suggest the faster you wanna go, the less turns make and drive in a straight row, while this may be dangerous because if you go really fast and there is some bump on the hill, then you can end up with a broken leg.
