Why did Skillet write The Last Night?

See the related links. The video is of John Cooper telling the meaning of the song, and preforming the song live!

The narrator is definitely God, the lead singer explained it.

The girl (in the song) wants to die because she thinks she's no good and everyone blames her for everything. She comes to God to say goodbye, that she won't be feeling like this anymore.

Then God steps in and is with her. He looks her in the eyes and tells her that he's there. She doesn't have to be alone anymore. He's everything she needs. He saves her.

Korey Cooper: "Yeah, that song was primarily written to those who are cutters or, you know, suicide, that whole deal. Over the last 2 to 3 years, we've been touring for a long time, but we've talked to a lot, a lot of young people that are into one or the other and it's so prevelent. I think it was kind of shocking for us 'cause at how prevelent it is.. almost one of the 'in' things to do it cutting and so we wanted to write a song where people, again, it's regarding loneliness as well. You're not aloe, you're never alone... and people just need to know that, man."

John Cooper: "I think that most people that really want to commit suicide probably do, and I think the cutting thing is not really about that as much as it is other issues. And it's crazy that it's become such a fad and stuff but, you know, I think that really is again a lot to do with this whole selfishness thing and just, you know, extreme life. It's like doing something extreme and gettin' crazy, it's like the next adrenaline rush and the next whatever.

And then you have your people that do just feel really alone and life sucks and 'I'm just gonna... whatever.' I think, again, I do think it's something we have to learn to satisfy our souls. The things that we long for the most all in our lives are not gonna be found with the next material possession. So, The Last Night, again can be taken in several different ways. This song could be someone laying there on their pillow at night and having this discussion with God, 'My life sucks and I don't want to do this anymore' - 'is there anybody out there?' type of thing, and it could be God saying, 'Yeah, that's right. I could be the one that will meet those needs.' But you know, the other thing about The Last Night is it could be a friend, that you're going to a friend, and there's someone that is saying, 'No matter what happens I will always be there for you.' You know, I think I like that twist on the song, that it could be either or because so much of the time we need somebody to be there for us. And as friends, we don't do the best job at being there for our fellow brothers and sisters... and if we are there, it's usually because we have a hidden motive about it. The record is called Comatose, and there's a lot of songs with a lot of these ideas in it, and one of the things is, let's wake up out of this sleep that we've been in, and what can I do for someone else? That's a pretty radical statement, I think.

That's a pretty radical statement for this generation - what can I do for someone else?"

Are there any literary devices in the song Monster by Skillet?

I am a middle school English teacher. I just read the lyrics and this is my take on it as far as literary devices:

Symbolism and metaphors are used to describe "the monster" which I see as possibly being temptation and sin. He tries to keep it locked inside and show the world only the good side of him. He is only a Christian on surface, and he is afraid that if you get close you will see his true inner evil self, yet he wants someone to rescue him from his evil and is subconscienciously seeking a saviour, someone to lead him to become a true Christian. I could be completely wrong, but that is just what I "read" into it.

Skillet's play what kind of music?

They are a hard-rock christian band; the rock songs would be "Comatose" or "Awake And Alive" and/or other songs similar to that and the kinda-metal-type-stuff would be "Whispers In The Dark" and stuff like that.

(Although it is not really metal, a good example of a Christian metal band is Demon Hunter.)

Christina rock is all Skillet plays. They are a strict Christian rock band.

Where did the band skillet originally start?

Basically, John Cooper's (lead singer) pastor had asked him if he wanted to do an outreach with a couple other musicians (i.e., starting a Christian band together). John, being the spontaneous type he was back in ole '96, said yes. All of the musicians part of the founding were coming from all different bands, so John came up with the idea of throwing all types of things in a Skillet and frying it up...and someone, at some point, said to John, "Hey, that could be the band's name!" And John's like, "Okay, sure, whatever." And thus became the band and the name itself...it started as a side project in Memphis Tennessee.

What is the meaning behind the song these nights by skillet?

Here's an excerpt from John Cooper's interview with JesusFreakHideout.com:

JFH: Well, "Those Nights" connected well with me as a married guy. I'm very sentimental. So, for me, that seems like a sentimental song.

John: Yeah, it isn't necessarily a young person song. It's about being young, so I felt the same thing. You just never know how people are gonna take a song. To me, that's kind of the magic of music. For instance, I haven't really been forthcoming about what the song "Lucy" is about.
