For individuals with glaucoma, it's essential to choose sleeping aids that do not increase intraocular pressure. Generally, non-benzodiazepine sleep medications like zolpidem (Ambien) or melatonin supplements may be safer options. However, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before using any sleep aid, as individual circumstances and overall health can vary significantly. Always follow the advice of your eye care specialist regarding safe medications.

What is the saying a witch riding your back?
It is a common name for sleep paralysis, a type of nightmare that takes place in low level REM sleep. A person's body is asleep, yet their brain is awake enough to perceive their surroundings. This explains why a person's body has the sensation of being heavy or immovable, almost as if something is sitting on their chest. The fact that they are in low level REM sleep explains why they see all sorts of scary creatures like witches or demons. A good illustration of this phenomenon is Heny Fuseli's beautiful painting "The Nightmare" (1781). Such night terrors are typically reported by African Americans from (or at least with ties to) the south, particularly in Louisiana where it is known as "Cauchemare." The earliest references to this phenomenon in the US come from the Salem witch trials of 1692. The oldest source that I know of mentioning the witch is the writing of an early 14th-century French physician who noted that the common folk believed the Incubus was an "old hag" who smothered adults and children in their sleep.
How do you get sleep in 5 minutes?
It's actually not good to fall asleep in 5 minutes. If you are able to fall asleep within 5 minutes of going to bed, that is a sign that you are sleep deprived and could be a result of a hidden sleep disorder.
Falling asleep should take about 10-15 minutes. To do so, make sure you're going to bed and waking up every day at the same time (even on weekends), your room is at a cool, comfortable temperature and is dark. Also avoid using electronics an hour before bed because the light emanating from them will cease the production of melatonin, which is a hormone that makes you sleepy.

Why do you hiccup in your sleep?
Well I have been hiccuping in my sleep since I was about 6 years old and it has never done me any harm, I am now 23. When I was younger my parents used to tell me that the hiccups were so loud that they could hear them from downstairs whilst I was upstairs. As I have got older they have become less frequent, but by no means disappeared. No idea what triggers them either, they just happen some nights. They are so bad they wake me up, but not enough to keep me from falling straight back to sleep once I have got rid of them (I normally just hold me breath for a second and they go). Sometimes I am told by my boyfriend that I had been hiccuping in my sleep again and only then is it I remeber waking up with them. I asked my doctor about them once before as I was worried they were dangerous and caused by me not breathing properly whilst I slept, but he said that he had never heard of that before, but it should be nothing to worry about, more irritating than anything else. The fact I have been having them for 17 years of my life makes me think that they are probably just a quirky thing that I have... and the fact that this question has been asked means I am not alone.

Can a person in a persistent vegetative state sleep through the night and be awake during the day?
A vegetative state is a condition of severe unconsciousness, with no thought at all, much like a vegetable. A person in a vegetative state does not wake up during the day or at any other time, or if such a person does wake up, then the vegetative state has ended. The term persistent vegetative state indicates that the vegetative state is not ending, it is persisting (or continuing). So, such people do not sleep during the night and wake up during the day. They remain unconscious.
