What is a limpet?

It is like a periwinkle except larger. They come in different shapes, sizes and colours. They are a mullusc and are actually snails! They stick themselves to rocks and use their rough tougue to scrape off microscopic seaweed. They only eat at night because it is the safest time to move around. They are herbivores and have an exoskeleton. They look like shells that you would find anywhere and they are almost super glued to rocks. Don't pull them off as you will remove their "suckers".

What does a real outdoor snail eat?

Alyssum, fruit and leaves of apple, apricot, artichoke (a favorite), aster, barley, beans, bindweed, California boxwood, almost any cabbage variety, camomile, carnation, carrot, cauliflower, celeriac (root celery), celery, ripe cherries, chive, citrus, clover, cress, cucumbers (a favorite snail food), dandelion, elder, henbane, hibiscus, hollyhock, kale, larkspur, leek, lettuce (liked, and makes good snails), lily, magnolia, mountain ash, mulberry, mums, nasturtium, nettle, nightshade berries, oats, onion greens, pansy, parsley, peach, ripe pears, peas, petunia, phlox, plum, potatoes (raw or cooked), pumpkins, radish, rape, rose, sorrel, spinach, sweet pea, thistle, thornapple, tomatoes (well liked), turnip, wheat, yarrow, zinnia. They will eat sweet lupines, but will reject bitter lupines and other plants with high quinolizidine alkaloids. Snails also avoid plants that produce other defensive chemicals, defensive stem hairs, etc.

Why does the snail have a shell?

An educated guess of mine is adaption. Yes, there are slugs, but they are more prone to be eaten or attacked by predators because they don't have a source of protection. Their vulnerable, slimy skin is exposed completely. Maybe snails are an adaption of these slugs, a twitch that Mother Nature made, by adding a shell. So when a snail is attacked, all they have to do is slip into their shell and they are probably nice and safe (unless the predator is smart enough to flip the snail over and peck at the flesh inside).

If snails could talk what would they say?

Snails are commonly known to be bilingual, the average snail speaks upto 7 languages, recent studies showed Chinese and Russian to be the most common languages amongst the snail universe. However some snails are born without voice boxes and have to use their antenas to communicate.

Why do snails leave a slime trail?

Snails leave a slime trail because of their limited movement. Snails are very small creatures, and coupled with the wait of their shell, they do not move very fast. Snails leave a trail of mucus, not slime (well i guess it counts as slime..:) in order to help them slip along faster. They use it to glide along on, and it helps them stick so they can hang upside down.

All three have been munching quite happily for several minutes now. I think they like it! Ok, yeah, after like 10 minutes now... they love it.

After a little more research, I have identified my snails as Helix Aspera or the Common European Brown Snail. They live here in California. I have a lot of them in my area. They are very happy eating almost everything (especially Cabbage) here is a list of other foods for these snails:

Buxus microphylla 'Japonica' (California boxwood), Crinum sp., Cupressus sempervirens L. (Italian cypress), Grevillea sp., Hibiscus spp., and Juniperus spp., Rosa sp., and other unidentified plants and shrubs at the Davie, Florida, infestation (1969). Gunn (1924) listed 49 plants as hosts in South Africa: Vegetables: cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, bean, beet, brussels sprouts, lettuce, mangel, onion, peas, radish, tomato, and turnips. Cereals: barley, oats, and wheat.
