The development of the North and the South differed in that the South?

The pre-Civil War South was more of an aristocracy than the northern states. TheSouth was a culture based in land ownership and position in the community than the northern states. The South's population was largely slave in many places, sometimes as much as 80% slave like South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama. The South was largely uneducated among both the slaves and the poor whites that existed alongside those indentured to the wealthy landowners. There were few roads, fewer schools and almost no railroads to speak of when the Civil War broke out. The South did more business with Europe and bought more European goods than they did from the northern states.

The Northern states were open to anyone who could work harder and prosper more than their neighbors and this was basically an affront to the aristocracy of the South. People who could carve out their fortunes in an open society were thought to be vulgar and base. While this wasn't based in anything other than pure class snobbery, it was a feeling that many in the old South held.

As a consequence, the old South could not move or bend to change with the times. As it became obvious that the ways of slavery were being outpaced and the institution should free their slaves, there are many today in history circles that doubt such a change could have come about peacefully. The South was simply too rigid and class oriented to survive in a world in flux, as America was in the 19th century.
